Among other advantages of the electric bus, which experts have already appreciated, is the simplicity of the design, which facilitates its maintenance. It is important to note that when creating the electric bus, special attention was paid to the use of materials of domestic production. Thus, the power plant control system was produced at one of St. Petersburg enterprises.

The work of the first electric buses has already been evaluated by the acting governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov. He noted that the rejection of internal combustion engines is a global trend and the Northern Capital is beginning to introduce advanced technologies into the public transport system.

– We must leave our children a city in which they can breathe clean air, – said Alexander Beglov. – In addition, the use of electric buses is economically feasible, since their maintenance costs three and a half times cheaper than buses running on diesel fuel.

He also noted that the fleet of electric buses in St. Petersburg will be expanded. If necessary, the models will be refined taking into account the opinions of St. Petersburgers.

St. Petersburg is always at the forefront of the development of the urban transportation system, and Volgabus supports the desire of the authorities and residents of the northern capital to use comfortable, safe and environmentally friendly transport.

St. Petersburg will be one of the first cities in Russia, where electric buses with a large power reserve and deep night charging will be operated not in test mode, but in working mode.

Charging of transport is carried out at night in the fleet of the enterprise, located in the Primorsky district, and will not require additional costs for the creation of infrastructure. Power station for charging is 2 mW. Electric buses with deep night charging are completely independent of the contact network. Their implementation does not require the creation of expensive infrastructure on the route. Among their other advantages – noiseless and simple design, which simplifies maintenance.

The Volgabus electric bus, in which we were the first passengers, is not much different from the traditional bus with an internal combustion engine in terms of interior. And yet, when the car gets under way, you understand that even an electric bus, if a “relative,” is even a distant diesel engine, even its gas counterparts. The fact is that the cabin is surprisingly quiet. The driver, at the request of the Fontanka correspondent, started and drowned out the electric bus several times – there was not a single sound that would indicate willingness to move. By the way, the car accelerates, according to the observations of driver Yuri, up to 100 km / h in just 12 seconds – a good indicator even for “cars”.

However, drive on a low-floor electric bus will not work. The speed of the machine is limited by electronic assistants at the request of the State Unitary Enterprise “Passazhiravtotrans”. The representative of the bus fleet number 2, Alexei Popov, who was also present at the run-in, noted that the average speed on urban routes does not exceed 20 km / h, therefore, the limit figure does not matter much.

The electric bus cannot be called absolutely silent. The sound in motion resembles a trolley bus, but much quieter. In addition, fan heaters can periodically be turned on in the cabin – the climate control system operates here, which itself turns on the heating in order to maintain the set temperature. In our case, the driver set +20 Celsius.

From what is not yet in any public transport you will see – USB sockets and a dedicated area for people with disabilities.

The screen constantly shows how many kilometers the electric bus can travel. However, if the figure, for example, 120 kilometers, is not a fact that the electric bus will “sit down” exactly after this distance is covered. As explained Popov, the figure is constantly changing depending on the style of driving. As soon as the driver accelerated sharply, the figure dropped to 90 km. However, smooth braking had barely begun, the figure of 189 km appeared on the screen.

“The cruising range is 240 km, and the average daily length of the route is about 170-180 km. That is, in principle, there is even a reserve of 60 km. To fully charge the batteries from scratch, you need 308-310 kW, but after charging it, naturally, it will be able to produce more. All thanks to the energy recovery system. For example, the driver slows down, and friction energy is transferred to the battery, ”explains Alexei Popov, a representative of bus depot No. 2.

Such energy-restorative braking was previously used on modern electric transport, but the energy returned was transmitted through a contact network either to other vehicles in the same system, or to a common power system through traction substations. In the Volgabus electric bus, all surplus is returned back to the batteries. There are as many as 1239 in the electric bus, and they are distributed in a balanced way throughout the electric bus’s running area. Outwardly, this “battery” is like a large videotape.

The day of the electric bus in terms of the cost of fuel will cost the company no more than 1,200 rubles, despite the fact that electricity for GUP Passenger Railways costs 4 rubles per kilowatt. Even in conditions of maximum consumption, which in practice should not happen, it is much cheaper than diesel equipment, which you need to fill up by about 4,000 rubles a day.

The first thing that comes to mind when it comes to batteries – fast discharge in the cold – we all know this effect in smartphones. But the developers thought of everything. There are two climate control systems in the electric bus: one for passengers in the cabin, the second for technical zones. Maintaining the desired temperature mode does not allow the batteries to prematurely discharge in the cold.

In the State Unitary Enterprise “Passenger Transport” said that since 2016 they have also tested models from other manufacturers: KamAZ and Minsk Belkommunmash. The electric buses of these manufacturers lose the Bakulin Motors Group in reserve: 70 km for a Russian vehicle, only 12 for the Belarusian vehicle. With such vehicles, the Passenger Transport would have to make serious investments in the infrastructure, setting up charging stations. And they need not only to be coordinated, but also to provide protection: not so much for the prevention of thefts, but for the safety of citizens.

Another advantage of Volgabus over its competitors is the complete electrification of the model, while both KamAZ and Belkommunmash made heating on the basis of a diesel generator, which is not at all environmentally friendly.

By the way, the car is almost entirely composed of domestic components. The only exception is the bridges with built-in electric motors – they are made in Germany.

The driver Yuri, for whom the status of the main tester was already established at the enterprise, drew attention to another distinction of the electric bus from other types of transport: the car reacts differently to pressing the gas pedal. To drive an electric bus, the driver must practice, get used to. However, for the month of running-in, everyone has become accustomed.

The representative of the bus fleet number 2, Alexei Popov, said that the Volgabus electric bus costs 30 million rubles, but thanks to government subsidies, Passenger Railways can buy them for 22 million rubles each. This is quite comparable with the prices of competitors, especially if you take into account the cost of infrastructure. Preliminary calculations do give a very nice picture, but it should be confirmed in practice.

The main topic of the event was the discussion and synchronization of work on the development of the model range of electric buses. Modernization will take place in stages. Volgabus electric buses will be prepared for export sales and adapted to international certification standards.

For the development of the electric bus model line at the Bakulin Motors Group plant in the Vladimir region, a new engineering center will be opened, where they plan to develop and test all promising design, technological and IT solutions.

In order to speed up service, Volgabus specialists will soon implement remote diagnostics protocols for electric buses.

Within the framework of the technical council, Volgabus Russian and foreign partners presented their proposals on the formation of an aggregate base and IT-solutions for the development of the project, including taking into account foreign certification.

“We want not only to follow world trends, but also to largely determine them. Therefore, Volgabus poses serious challenges for its engineers and technology partners, which make it possible to find advanced solutions together, ”said Bakulin Motors Group CEO Alexey Bakulin.

New “Volgabasy”, published on the routes in Orenburg, are already highly appreciated by passengers. “This is the most economical mode of transport that runs on gas equipment. I think this is the only viable option for the development of the enterprise. Today, the new Volgabasy covers three social routes: 20, 21 and 24. They travel to distant parts of the city – to Mayak and Sulak. So far, the passengers speak only positively about large buses and it seems that this type of transport for the city is the most appropriate and comfortable.

PMU "Passenger car" announced a tender for the purchase of electric buses, in which many samples of different manufacturers were tested, and in the end we chose our cars. They performed well on the test, including at low temperatures. Now electric buses on the final test run. For a full day of work, each will take about 240 kilometers, and then go for night charging.

How does battery life work?

In electric buses, lithium-ion batteries, whose average service life is 5-6 years, then the whole set changes. Battery Management System produced by St. Petersburg company "Chergos", so that in every electric bus there is a significant part of the knowledge and work of the citizens themselves. Our electric bus has all electric bus systems: starting from the power steering and ending with heating. Manages the power consumption of the computer, optimizing consumption.

How does an electric bus fundamentally differ from a traditional bus?

If we compare the electric bus with a traditional bus, it does not pollute the atmosphere and is practically silent, which is extremely important for the urban environment. From the carrier’s point of view, the initial investment in the electric bus is much larger, but maintenance and operation are much cheaper.

In the capital, electric buses are already working on some routes. What is the St. Petersburg project different from Moscow?

There are three charging concepts. The first of them – dynamic requires serious infrastructure and constant recharging on the route (in fact, this is a trolley bus with the possibility of an autonomous course). The second approach is ultrafast charging at the end stops, but this option is good only on short routes. In addition, it requires large investments in infrastructure outside the parks. Such electric buses work in Moscow. The third type – night full charge. We are sure that this type of electric buses is the most promising. This is an excellent solution with a minimum of costs – no additional infrastructure is needed, charging takes place at night, when the load on the network is reduced, and electricity is cheaper. And our findings are confirmed by European trends. In Paris, for example, they are betting on night exercises in parks, after conducting extensive comparative testing.

You produce diesel buses, gas engines, and electric buses. How profitable is environmentally friendly transport?

Gas engine is more expensive than diesel, electric bus is more expensive than gas engine, but this is at the first stage. And in operation, the opposite is true. Now, in many cities, transport companies that have switched to gas-engine buses have retained their positions, and those that work with diesel engines are leaving the market. But even in comparison with a gas-engine bus, an electric bus is much more efficient from an economic point of view. And the problem of high initial prices is solved, for example, through government subsidies. I will cite specific figures: 1 working shift of a bus on diesel fuel costs 5-6 thousand, on gas – 1.5 thousand, and on an electric bus – 350 rubles. It turns out that the higher cost of the electric bus, due to the presence of the battery, is offset by the low cost of operation.

What is your forecast for the future? Will eco-friendly competitors force out diesel?

It can be said that the world is experiencing an electrical revolution. And St. Petersburg is keeping abreast of trends. In Europe, there are only 300 electric buses, but Paris plans to purchase 4,000 units in the coming years. The leader remains China, where every year more than 100 thousand electric buses go to the routes. Of course, government support plays a key role there.

I can say that even 10 cars will give a significant environmental effect for St. Petersburg. The amount of emissions will noticeably decrease, and the noiselessness of electric buses will be estimated by both passengers and residents of Vasilyevsky Island along which the routes pass.

This year, Volgabus plans to produce 50 electric buses, but as soon as production goes beyond 500-600 units per year, we will get good preferences from component suppliers, which will reduce the cost of the final product.

Obviously, the internal combustion engine is a thing of the past. Almost all public transport parks in Europe, many cities in Latin America and the United States will be completely electric by 2030–2035. What type of environmentally friendly fuel to choose depends on the city – the main thing is that the residents breathe easily, and we, as manufacturers, will do everything possible.

Another batch of Volgabus buses went to Khabarovsk. This time, the 10m gas engine vehicles will operate on routes served by a private carrier.

The solemn ceremony of handing over the keys from the new technology took place the day before. The event was attended by transport workers, representatives of the administration of the region and the city of Lipetsk.

All five electric buses have a 100% low floor level to ensure the availability of transport to low-mobile groups of the population. Machines are equipped with air conditioning. Charged from a standard industrial 380 V socket in just 5 hours.

Lipetsk was one of the first regions to introduce environmentally-friendly transport on its routes. Moreover, in contrast to the metropolitan colleagues, here they preferred cars with night exercises. In addition to saving on the cost of the equipment itself, as well as infrastructure construction, the Cityritm-12E electric buses are able to remain on the route all day long, without requiring additional charging stations at the end points.

Interestingly, predominantly electric buses will be driven by women. By the way, there are already more than ten people in the state of Lipetsk passenger transport.

The next contract was a continuation of the successful cooperation started with the Perm transport workers in 2018. Now there are 43 “Volgabus” buses operating in the region, which have proven themselves well in both private companies and the Permgorelectrotrans park. In addition, Perm was one of the first cities in Russia to test the newest electric bus CityRitm-12E on regular routes.

According to the terms of the new auctions, the fleet of the municipal carrier from April will fill up 65 diesel and 20 gas 12-meter low-floor buses.
