Best Travel Compact Camera

In the Russian-speaking part of the network, there is not a single adequate review of this curious camera yet, so you have to write your own, with blackjack and whores, biased and biased. That is truthful.

Thanks to everyone who commented on my announcement in LiveJournal and asked questions. In the end, I will definitely answer them, but first things first.

How to review Lake? This is a deliberately provocative topic. Four fifths of my readers and without reviews know that a watering can is an inexpensive device useful in a garden. But what to say to the rest? How to justify to those who are ready to explode out of indignation at the mere mention of this subject?

Okay, I’ll start from afar. How do I feel about Leica cameras? In general, no way. Just know that there is such a brand. In the days of Cartier-Bresson, Leica used to be the workhorses of photojournalists, much like the top Canon and Nikon cameras now. And the design of Leek was determined by technologies and ideas about the ergonomics of the time, that is, it was modern and functional.

But then, in the 60–70s and beyond, SLR cameras with autofocus and autoexposure began to develop rapidly. Lake did not fully master all these changes, and her paths diverged from professional journalists. Practical pros voted wallets for Japanese cameras, and Leica was leaked.

So Lake has become the lot (and hostage) of a certain Afitsionado stratum – enthusiasts and fans of the historic brand – willing to pay for the pleasure of shooting with some kind of obscure old-fashioned classic cameras. The key term here is “fun to shoot.” That is, the feeling of the process, rather than megapixels, is the final product that attracted them.

Unlike another premium brand, Contax, which bent around the same time, Leica managed to catch the trend and occupied the niche of expensive cameras “for fun”.

It’s about as a wristwatch … although I won’t lie, what do I know about watches? I don’t even have them. Let’s tell about the camera better.

As you already understood, I am reserved with Leiki, and Q bought out of curiosity in order to sell and purchase something more understandable, such as the Fuji X100T.

What kind of camera is this? Leica Q (Typ 116) is a small compact camera with a non-replaceable lens. Lens – Fix 28mm

That is, this camera sees the world approximately as an iPhone, and the picture at the output of it is physically slightly larger than that of Canon 5DIII – 6000x4000px.

UPD: Journalists write that the Leiki Kew sensor is identical to what it is in many other curative cameras, for example, in the M-Series range finder (M-D and M Typ 240).

DesignThere are, conditionally, three Leek design directions: classic, modern, and type-professional. Q refers to the classic, but with modern features. She has the design and control of her rangefinder M-series, but instead of a real rangefinder, an electronic viewfinder and autofocus. And it is noticeably smaller and lighter than M-ki.

When I was a student, in the late 90s – early 2000s, I worked as an author in the Mobile News magazine – I wrote on all sorts of topics related to digital photos: technology reviews, processing lessons and

And so, once they gave me a strange camera for the test – the Leica Digilux 2, maybe someone else remembers it. Then there was no mention of Fuji X, and she looked more than extravagant.

Hipsters would love it. True, in Russia they were not there then. Either they were already, but they still did not know that they were hipsters, and that they should like this.

What does a photo consist of? From a technical point of view – from the exposure and focus. Exposure – these are three numbers: shutter speed, aperture and sensitivity. And the focus is when the bunny is wearing a hat. Everything. There is nothing more there.

Here, an attentive reader will ask: if the photo is three numbers and focus, then why do all modern cameras have 100500 buttons, three wheels and a joystick? – And this is, in fact, a difficult question. To answer it, you have to write another post about evolution. But in short, it just happened.

So, Lake, as a brand, is trying to go upwind and sell a return to the basics: direct control of these three numbers and focus, and nothing superfluous. As far as possible in the conditions of the free market and the love of mankind towards all that is superfluous

Does it work out? – In some form. Rather yes than no.

Leica Kew’s management is a purist’s dream. Well, or almost. Exposure dial, aperture ring, focus ring. All three can either be turned by hand, or put in “A” (auto).

Of course, she also has an exposure compensation wheel, a joystick to move the focus point, and a row of buttons on the menu to walk. But, on sensations, all this economy really comes nearer to a minimum, for a digital camera with a display and autofocus.

– Is it convenient? – Yes, this is most wonderful.

By the way, for those who want an even more hardcore minimum, Lake makes the camera Leica M-D, which has no autofocus or display. And fewer buttons. Accordingly, it is sold much more expensive. For the Leica buyer must pay not for the presence of something, but for the absence. On off One of the main questions: does it turn on quickly? – Quickly. Less than a second. – Is it convenient to turn it on? – But this is not quite. The switch has two positions on: single shooting (S) and serial (C). AT

Autofocus – Braking? – Nope. Quick, do not carp. The speed of the focus is almost like a 5DIII with some nimble lens. Actually, the 5DIII is a bit faster, of course, but not very much. All you need to know is that, subjectively, Leiki Q’s autofocus is perceived as fast. It seems that this is by far the fastest CD I’ve ever seen.

Manual focus Best in class. On the ring of focus such an emphasis is fixed with a notch for the finger, focusing tab (see below). Over time, you begin to almost blindly focus, focusing simply on his position.

To switch from auto to manual, you need to press a small button on this tab, and the focus ring is unlocked. Great feature, I immediately got used to.

Implemented manual focus, it seems to me, mechanically, and not by-wire, like Fuji. That is, you take and twist a smooth ring, which rests on the extreme positions, like a fully mechanical lens. No lag is not felt. If this is such a by-wire imitating mechanics, then the trick was a success – not distinguish from mechanics.

UPD: Did not guess. Focus turned out to be by-wire! I accidentally discovered this and this is how: if you call the exposure compensation scale, and while it is on the screen, twist the focus ring, the ring rotates and the real focus in the picture does not change. But immediately after confirming the correction, the lens makes a quiet electronic “Whack” and catches up with the ring.

The deception is so high-quality that even in the majority of English-language reviews, journalists swear that the manual focus is real mechanical.

Focus control Also the best of everything I’ve seen so far. First, you can focus on the lens on a scale without any control, like in old times. For example, we set up a diaphragm 8, make it sharp from two meters to infinity and shoot on the street without looking:

The behavior of this feature, the degree of increase and even the color of the illumination of sharp places can be adjusted in the menu. But I did not do this, because this camera is about as a MacBook or iPhone – all the settings from the box right away are quite reasonable, take it and use it.

LensThe picture is nice, the sharpness is right from

PictureFor my taste, perhaps even better than the 5DIII. It seems that the camera slightly embellishes reality. It resembles a slide, but not a scan (as you know, you can scan the fig well), but the film itself, when you look at it in life on a light table.

Here, by the way, I thought, and how do you show pictures? Displays are different for everyone, who can see what is impossible to predict. To begin, I will show you how you can open them. Below, the same image is open in the Lightroom with three different Adobe Standard, Embedded and RNI profiles (from RNI All Films 4), and at the end there is generally a camera jpeg for comparison:

Display Magic. By resolution, viewing angles and colors are almost better than an iPhone. And the update rate of the picture is very high, it looks like 60fps.

Another touch display understands all sorts of gestures, but this is for show. The touchpad is implemented buggy and slow compared to smartphones and, in general, is not needed. I use it only to return the focus point to the center — double tap anywhere.

Electronic viewfinder The resolution is very high, nothing flickers, the refresh rate is high – so good that sometimes I forget that I look in EVF. Only colors lie a little – it shows everything is slightly more contrast than on the screen and in the file.

How does she shoot? Do not believe it, but also good. Shutter lag is minimal, noticeably less than that of my former Fuji X-E and Sony a7r. The sound is a pleasant mechanical “click”, quiet and delicate. The shutter is central, leaf shutter, if it tells you something, and after 1/2000 it is electronic and generally silent.

In “C” mode, it can shoot at speeds up to 10fps. But on the card, even on the fast one, it writes noticeably slower than the top DSLRs. Especially noticeable if in DNG + JPG to shoot – each frame in the amount of 50MB is obtained. If you quickly shoot, the buffer is clogged up in 10-12 frames and then it is empty for 30 seconds as it is written.

High ISO Like about everyone now. At 12800 it is still quite possible to shoot.

Battery charge Keeps a long time. At least take a look. In practice, even at first, when I was actively studying the camera, I charged it once every 2 days. According to subjective sensations, the charge holds almost twice as long as the other mirrorless ones mentioned above.

Video There is a button. I did not try to press.

Wi-Fi Surprisingly, a live feature. You create a grid with a camera, cling to it with a phone and pick up pictures (full-size jpg) through the wired app. You can still control the camera from the same app, a la tethering.

It is possible that now I will upload to instagram not only captured by the phone.

How does it compare to Sony? If we compare it with a7 mirrorless or with RX1 compact, then nominally the dormice is longer. More Megapixels, more buttons, features and settings and

All the Sony I used to use were such electronic combines. "all for all" thickly covered with buttons and wheels. At the same time, they ate the battery, they could brake when turned on / off and were not in their hands very much.

In general, Sonya, in my opinion, has better picture resolution and some other technical indicators. But, at the same time, they are made by corporate marketing robots for very wide groups of buyers. And Lake Kew was made exclusively for two people: for me and that eccentric, who needed the “video” button for some reason.

And compared to Fuji? Okay, comparable to Fuji X100T / X-E / X-Pro. If you explain with one picture, then in Fuji company (left) they think that white dots should be put next to the On and Off symbols, because I don’t even know why, just in case, what might have happened, and suddenly without dots somehow It will not look that way, well, leave me alone with your points, they are still doing it. And in Lake (right) they think that it is not necessary, because it is stupid and unaesthetic:

Thus, a simple dotted example demonstrates the fundamental differences in the design philosophy of the two products.

And also the typography on the disk of excerpts – look, Fuji has everything in a nasty font, a heterogeneous type, with nasty kerning. And the designations relate to each other in a godless way. And Leyka has a good font, one size and everything is beautifully turned. And no one is concerned for some reason. Although the disk is exactly the same.

Moreover, I will tell you a secret, as a former designer, it is beautiful to arrange the disc for excerpts or it takes about the same time through the ass. There is no feat in doing immediately well. All that is needed is to be able to distinguish well from bad and not do bad. The question is purely culture and will.

But seriously, then Lake is just comparable to Fujami. And given the cost of Leek, Fuji cameras are generally much better. Previously, after the release of the first Fuji X cameras, on English-language sites they were sometimes called "poor man’s Leica". Now it is increasingly possible to find a reference to the Lake as a "rich man’s fuji".

I would say that, physically, Leyki are made inadequately qualitatively – their materials and mechanics look like they were designed for decades. Although, a no brainer, e-stuffing morally obsolete much faster. In this sense, Fuji cameras, which are also well made and pleasant to the touch, look more honest and balanced.

Fujiki, like Leiki, is also invented by living people. In them, despite the bad typography, there is also a love for the process of photography and classical aesthetics. But at the same time, they sin in places stylization and imitation. A cropped matrix, manual focusing with lag by-wire, lack of depth of field scales on the lenses and some excess buttons and pens to please different audiences (everything for every man).

In the picture – FIG knows the matter of taste. For now, I prefer the hellish color and contrast. But there are those who, on the contrary, switched from Fuji to Fuji and are also satisfied – this is a matter of personal preference. I repeat once again that most modern cameras shoot very well and do not interfere with taking good photos.

Price Carefully, this is the most outrageous paragraph. In the UK, Leica Q costs around £ 3,200. Okay, if you buy not a new one, but a little second-hand (mine is about a month), then a little less. And if you still sell something unnecessary on the i-bei, then, in principle, you can try to convince yourself that this is acceptable. But this is a big stretch.

What is £ 3200 in real world terms? Google says that in Russia it is about 270 thousand rubles. That is, these are 2-3 monthly salaries, for example, of a good designer in Moscow. Or one very good, like a successful freelancer. You can correct me in the comments, I have not learned for a long time that in Moscow with incomes in the creative industry. But is it reasonable to spend so much on “just a camera”? Not sure.

In principle, I can imagine a stubborn hobbyist who can lean on such a camera. And if he still succeeds in proving to the tax department that he needs a camera for work, he can buy it as a company and save another 20–25 percent of its value on taxes.

– Is it possible to spend so much on a hobby? – Depends on the circumstances of life.

– Does Leica’s pricing cause outrage? – Of course.

Questions and answers

Q: What is the difference between watering cameras and others? Its glass is understandable. But not a single glass. Matrix they do not release?

A: The glass and matrix of this camera are, of course, good, but not so cosmically better than the others. And in general, most modern cameras are very good, so that the characteristics of Lake is not particularly stands out.

The essence of Leyka, as it seemed to me, is that it is focused on a layer of aesthetes-enthusiasts and tries to sell them not characteristics, but the pleasure of using the camera and the process of photographing. Mostly successful.

Q: Does at least some harmonization take place in the camera when generating a Zhipega, or does the output have the same boring digital color?

A: Apparently, yes. As I wrote above, zhpeg is noticeably different from what I did in converters. Personally, he reminds me of something intermediate between a digit and a slide.

Q: Why is Lake? New Sonya, they say, is quite good, and the new Fuji X-T2 is almost a direct competitor tripyatak on speed.

A: It is. Fuji and Sony make excellent cameras. Lake – because, firstly, out of curiosity. And secondly, because of aesthetics: good typography, minimal design, direct control without a bunch of buttons, which I will not use. In this field, the selection is small.

Q: Does Sony have the same model-RX1RM2, did not consider?

A: Yeah, there is. But changing a7r to it would be like an awl on soap. Judging by the reviews, this is still the same slow and gluttonous device densely covered with buttons, only a non-removable lens. But 7r was still a brake. Do not turn off in time – eating battery. Turn it off and immediately turn it back on – you have to wait at least five seconds until it completes the shutdown cycle and goes off. The buttons, switches and dials on the case of Sony are dark. Given that the camera for me is the exposure, focus and shutter button, Sony would be somewhat redundant.

Q: Why exactly q?

A: Just a good model for my style and possibilities. Distance meters Leyki-M are too expensive for me and bulky. The younger ones – Leica-T – are too soap cases (for my taste again) – small matrices, indirect control and

A: It turns out not. True, she has a function, like a digital crop. In the process of shooting, you can switch between a field of view of 28/35 / 50mm. But I do not use it, you can sprinkle it after. Verdict Fast and convenient personal camera with simple controls. A better alternative to the iPhone for travel, photo essay and documentation of life events. It has a chance to appeal to aesthetes, snobs, item designers, or simply those who love photography in its classic sense.

Pros: The best compact camera, from all that I have ever had to shoot.

Minuses: This is just a camera. You can spend £ 3200 for just a camera only from curiosity and hopelessness.

Will I change it to Fuji X100T, as I planned at the beginning of the review? Not. Never.
