Toothbrush with soft bristles: what is it?

All manufactured toothbrushes must necessarily have a stiffness index on the package: this is the question of how to determine whether a soft toothbrush or not, as well as which toothbrush is softer. There are two subcategories – extra-soft toothbrushes (Sensitive) and soft (Soft). The remaining species have a medium or high degree of rigidity.

Indications and contraindications for the use of soft toothbrushes

  • Children up to 12 years old with baby teeth.
  • People with sensitive enamel or recent bleaching procedures.
  • Bleeding gums and periodontal disease.
  • Diabetes mellitus and problems with blood clotting.
  • Teeth mobility.
  • In the absence of hyperesthesia enamel, gum disease and other restrictions.
  • In the presence of tartar and predisposition to the rapid formation of loose plaque.
  • The crowding of teeth and narrow interdental spaces.
  • Enamel yellow and regular tobacco use.

Soft toothbrush or medium hardness?

If you are not a child and you have a completely healthy oral cavity, then you will hardly need super-soft toothbrushes. An ultra-soft toothbrush is extremely gentle on teeth and gums, but, on the other hand, it is less effective. The soft bristles do not penetrate deep enough into the narrow spaces between the teeth and generally do not adhere sufficiently to the enamel surface. If you do not like the feeling of using hard toothbrushes, then we advise you to choose a product marked soft (soft) or medium (medium). Some manufacturers produce the latter type under the category “soft hardness toothbrush,” although this sounds like an oxymoron.

Of great importance are the length and shape of the bristles, as well as the number of tufts. For example, sharp bristles can better clean narrow interdental spaces, and standard or rounded ones are more suitable for people with sensitive gums.

Electric soft toothbrush

Electric toothbrushes have their advantages and disadvantages. Due to intensive rotational movements, they effectively clean the surface of the teeth, but at the same time they can drive plaque under the gum, and also quite aggressively affect the enamel and surrounding tissues. That is why the presence of a soft nozzle in the case of an electric toothbrush is very justified.

Soft toothbrush

Today there are also combined options on the market, when one part of the head has bristles of medium hardness and the other is soft. Thus, it is possible to maintain a balance of efficiency and safety. It should be understood that if you have an electric toothbrush with soft bristles, the nozzles, as a rule, require more frequent replacement.

How to make a toothbrush soft?

Many people are interested in ways to make a hard toothbrush soft. The correct option is to initially purchase a toothbrush with the desired stiffness index. Even if you made a wrong choice, it is better to go to the store and buy a new product. If you want to slightly soften a hard toothbrush right here and now, you can hold it under hot water for one or two minutes. A more radical way – after wetting, lower the brush head in warm vinegar for half an hour. Even the hardest bristles after this procedure should become noticeably softer.
