General information about propolis.
Propolis (also called bee glue, Oza) is a plasticine-like substance, with which the bees in the hive close up the cracks and isolate harmful foreign objects entering the hive. Along with honey, perga, royal jelly and zabrus is one of the traditional products of beekeeping. Bee glue is a little part of the zagrus and zabrusnogo honey. Bees get it from substances sticky deciduous and coniferous trees, vegetable juices, mixing it all with pollen and its own saliva.
Interesting facts about propolis.
The word propolis is of Greek origin. As is known, the policy in Greek is a city. Pro – means ahead. That is, propolis means Ahead of the city, which is not surprising, since the bees mostly cover the entrance to the hive, and the entrance, as you know, is the city gate of the bee city, called the hive. Even in ancient times, people noticed that this product has anti-rotten, embalming and mummifying action. In the well-known work Canon of Medical Science Avicenna wrote that black wax (as he called bee glue) pulls out the ends of arrows and spikes from wounds, it cleans, dilutes and slightly softens. Prices were always very high, higher than honey and wax. More than 6000 years ago, glue was used by Egyptian priests to mummify the bodies of the pharaohs. Even when boiling in water, it retains all (!) Its properties for an hour! It is known that bacteria adapt to any antibiotic. There is even a danger that over time, surviving bacteria that carry the genetic code of resistance to the antibiotic can use it (the antibiotic) for food. However, there are no bacteria that could overcome bee glue. Thousands of studies have been carried out, ending in nothing. Bee glue kills even resistant staphylococcus, not to mention golden. The propolis is also sensitive (it destroys) hemolytic streptococcus, pseudo-purulent and diphtheria sticks. Suspends the growth of tuberculosis and the causative agent of typhus. At the same time, propolis does not cause dysbacteriosis. Proved that Oza, unlike antibiotics, has less toxicity, no side effects, has a more physiological effect.
How to choose high-quality propolis.
Bees treat propolis mainly in the tap-hole, the upper surface at the frames, and the side parts at the frames. The highest quality propolis – letkovy. But it is usually not so much. And the propolis from the top of the framework is often building and contains quite a lot of wax. It is in the form of tracks. Most of the tracks are green, red, brown (propolis), but there are also light yellow – wax tracks. It is important that the beekeeper does not mix wax and propolis tracks. The highest quality propolis is fresh, freshly harvested. He sticks to his hands. And not the heat of the hands, but just sticks. It contains the most light phytoncides – the most beneficial to human health and possessing the strongest antimicrobial properties. Once the bees made a hefty propolis batch on a letke. He was surprisingly sticky, straight flowing on his hands. It was impossible to chew it – it stuck in the teeth. As a result, I just absorbed it in my mouth, gluing it to the palate. Every sip of saliva was incredibly bitter, healing. I shared a small piece with my friend (he had a runny nose). After some time, he could not stand it and ran to rinse his mouth, but the most surprising thing is that after 10 minutes of resorption, his rhinitis completely passed! So if you find such propolis, then you are very lucky! Over time, propolis becomes more solid, some of the phytoncids light evaporate. In my opinion, crystallization of phytoncides is possible, although it needs to be checked under laboratory conditions and is rather difficult due to the large amount of substances in bee glue.
If you have larvae in a bondage, then do not worry. This is only an indicator of the freshness of propolis. These are fireworm larvae. A firestorm often settles under a lap and feeds on wax tracks and partly on wax, which is part of propolis (and wax always comes in propolis). Just crush the larvae (or even butterflies) and calmly use the product for health.
In no case do not take the propolis, the last cleaning in water. Some beekeepers clean it in water – particles that are rich in wax float, and propolis settles to the bottom. However, at the same time, propolis loses a huge amount of useful substances that dissolve in water (the water turns dark). A teacher at the Beekeeping Academy, who lectured us about this product, warned us about this. This only applies to bee glue, which has been cleaned up in wastage.
Are there many waxes in propolis – usually they are tested by dropping it in water. If the bee glue is in a lump, then it can be immersed in water without fear; it will not lose its properties. If a ball comes up, there is a lot of wax. If it goes to the bottom with a stone, then good propolis. But not all high-quality propolis stone goes to the bottom. A case from practice. My father polishes a lot of bee glue by folding the propolis slats in the freezer and then scooping the product with a knife. It turns out propolis dust. If it is molded into a lump, then inside there will be many, many small air bubbles, and they will not allow the unit to descend into the water. Moreover, if the propolis dust is heated in a microwave, and then carefully crushed with your fingers, squeezing out all the air, the bee glue will quickly sink into the water. You can see an example of such a case in the video below.
The composition of propolis includes more than 280 compounds, but only 111 of them are identified. It consists of terpenic compounds (terpenic acids), which have a pronounced antifungal effect. Also in the composition of this product includes many flavonoids (kaempferol, ramnazine, ramnocentrin, akatsetin, isorhamnetin), which have an active antimicrobial and wound healing effect. Organic acids are also present in bee glue, in particular: benzoic, caffeic, cinnamic, which effectively stop the development of bacteria and also have analgesic properties. It also has resins, waxes and essential oils that have antiviral effects. It contains tannins that have an anti-inflammatory effect, help the regeneration of damaged tissues. In total, the composition of this product includes about 50 active substances. The table below shows the average content of the main components of the bee glue:
