Good weather has gone, autumn and rainy days have returned, and many people have experienced bouts of blues and a gloomy mood. How to deal with the autumn depression?
Good deeds compensate for the lack of physical light.
– Despondency is a spiritual, psychological, and physiological phenomenon. Man is created to live in the light, and the absence of sunlight can, indeed, lead to a state of depression. Many people, and the truth, meteozavisimy.
How to compensate for this? I think that active people who are not accustomed to sit back can do works of mercy. For example, to help the deaf-blind – those who constantly live in darkness in the literal sense of the word. Good deeds compensate for the lack of physical light. We often call Christ "the Quiet Light" and "the Sun of Truth." First of all, we must seek Him. Consciously or unconsciously, but seek. And He is in good deeds.
Of course, seasonal depression can be treated and compensated with medicines, but this is still psychiatry and this is for those who are far from spiritual work. I think that a person who helps other people who find themselves in an even more difficult situation will surely compensate for the lack of sunlight, and the spleen will go away. Prayer, the search for Christ – and then there will be no depression.
And in this world there are enough reasons for joy.
– If depression is associated exclusively with autumn weather and the desire to extend the summer, then this is a result of our pamperedness. This is how we have raised several generations, that we perceive any inconvenience as tragedy: “Well, we did not have time to get a piece of happiness lawfully due to us!” In such a situation, it is better for a person to realize that the world is imperfect due to our sinfulness, and the words “we” “Our” includes me specifically.
“… how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God and to wait from heaven for His Son, whom He raised from the dead, Jesus, delivering us from the coming wrath” (1 Thess. 1: 9–10). Precisely by this expectation of the “new heaven and new earth” (Is. 65: 17) at the coming of Christ we should console ourselves, being in prayer and complacency. However, in this world there are enough reasons for joy, you just need to look at life positively. It started to rain – it means that we are not threatened by drought; snow lies – it means winter crops will not freeze; the wind brings us clean air, and the cold eliminates many infectious infections.
Another thing, if depression – a symptom of a serious illness. In this case, you must consult a doctor.
If in the soul the Sun of Truth shines – Christ, then in any weather we will be fine
Review your relationship with loved ones, because the joy of communicating with them gives you the strength to endure any difficulties.
– Why in the fall, when rainy slushy days come, do people experience bouts of depression and melancholy? This is because a person does not have something important, some main joy, and therefore he may be overly influenced by some minor factors in general. But if a person is passionate about something and it gives him joy, then depression does not threaten him. He is fascinated by work, some book or, for example, in love. Here lovers walk in the rain, and they feel good.
And for us Christians, besides some earthly joys, the source of our main joy is our Lord Jesus Christ. If we have this joy in the Lord, no one will take this joy away from us. If the Sun of Truth shines in the soul – Christ, then in any weather we will be fine.
And another important point. When people catch up with frequent bouts of blues, they need to reconsider their relationship with loved ones. Because the joy of communicating with loved ones gives strength to endure difficulties far greater than bad weather. If we have fallen out of love with our loved ones or in a quarrel with them, then in such a state of loneliness we are depressed and depressed. Therefore, we must not only pray, but also be in peace and joy, in love with all our loved ones, try to make them enjoyable. Then our life and will not be subject to the influence of weather and some everyday troubles.
Do not stop and jokes – do not shame
If it is sad at heart, take any akathist – there is so much joy!
– Autumn depression should be resisted like any other temptation – prayer. However, if autumn was depressive at times, then a classic would not have written: “Autumn time is fascinating eyes”.
If it is sad at heart, take any akathist – there is so much joy! In general, we often drive ourselves into a kind of Orthodox ghetto. It all seems to us that repentance should be written on our face, read in deeds and clothes. Not! Therefore, it is said in the Gospel: "But you, when you fast, anoint your head and your face with wash" (Matt. 6:17). We must always be complacent, joyful and vigorous. It seems to me that if a person does not have a sense of humor, some kind of good fun, then this is already some kind of artificial narrowing of Orthodoxy. This is some kind of sectarianism.
Look, in any sect, people are muddy and gloomy. And we, the Orthodox, give this pharisee fog of pseudo-repentance to ourselves, reproach and lecture everyone around us, and it seems to us that this is truly Orthodox behavior.
Then, of course, autumn is not a joy, and winter, and everything else. And you, brother, pray carefully at home, and on the street rejoice at the yellow and red leaves, the sky in ragged clouds, then you will come to work calm and ready to work. Do not shun and jokes – do not disgrace. Only the joke should not be a mockery of a brother, but the joy you share with your neighbor. Then it’s not ridiculous at all, but a natural antidepressant.
Here are some saints to pray in case of depression
– The question of depression is very relevant. According to one statistician, in modern society, every second person at least once in their lives experiences problems of a mental nature. Of course, this may be short-term failures associated with the crisis situations of life. Moreover, the predominant type of mental disorders is depression of various types and degrees.
I would like to clarify. Often, we mistakenly call depression bad mood, despondency, and sadness. However, these are all different things. The passion of gloom is laziness, neglect of salvation. Despondency is expressed as inner lethargy, weakness in relation to prayer or good deeds. A person who is prone to despondency can linger on the sofa for half a day, he seems to be exhausted, but with pleasure he spends his energy on computer games or watching movies, on anything, but not on a creative business.
Another depression-like passion is sadness. In short, the passion of sadness is grief and longing. Such a person likes to wind up pessimistic thoughts, not to trust in God, but to dream of the sorrow of his almost the only unhappy person in the world. The sinful “ego” of man is at the heart of the passions of despondency and sadness. Weather or autumn time is not to blame.
Quite another thing – depression as a health disorder. Unfortunately, many refer to this down, and when a loved one gets sick, they do not provide him with adequate support. It even happens that people say about a sick person: “Here he (she) screwed up something for himself and idle, and I, such a strong (strong) spirit, overcome everything with my prayer and faith.” Such a downward neighbor is spiritually more unwell spiritually than a mentally ill person.
Acquaintance with psychiatry, with the patients of the respective hospitals, quickly enough shows that besides despondency and sadness there is actually an organism’s malfunction. Depression in its own form is a disease, a failure of mental stability, a disorder. Interestingly, such a person may even try not to lose heart, cut off sad thoughts, but experiences physiological weakness, apathy, as if the lights are off and it is difficult to take a step further. He suffers the same way as, say, a person infected with the flu, who is forced to bedridden, although he does not want it. In this sense, a depressed patient needs help from a specialist and, as a rule, drug treatment.
If depression has occurred in a medical sense, then treatment should not be ignored. Often, people are afraid to talk with a specialist, they suffer their condition and due to illness they lose the opportunity to pray, they do not have the strength to stand at the divine service in the temple. It is necessary to understand that medical treatment helps to return the strength needed for spiritual life, for prayer, for participation in temple worship and doing good.
Properly built spiritual life smoothes the severity of the disease, reduces the degree of aggravation
On the other hand, the spiritual life itself, correctly built, usually reduces the risk of mental illness and smoothes out its manifestations. If the disease has already visited anyone, then do not panic, you need to be treated, accept your illness as a cross sent down by God and turn to God with all your heart. When the soul is humbled, repents of sins, is cleared of grumbling, resentment and anger, then inside comes relief. Properly built spiritual life smoothes the severity of the disease, reduces the degree of exacerbation associated, say, with the fall.
I will open the little-known facts from the life of the saints.
After the inhuman tests in prison dungeons and exile, St. Luke (Voyno-Yasenetsky) was seriously upset by his health. He diagnosed himself with neurasthenia himself, which, by the way, quite calmly reported in his letters. The disease ceased to be effective only when the saint regained the opportunity to regularly serve the Liturgy. Divine services restored his spiritual strength, and the saint could work again. Sometimes relapses happened, but it is surprising how calmly St. Luke perceived this, relying entirely on God.
St. Ignatius (Bryanchaninov) at one time refused the additional duties assigned to him, as he himself wrote, in view of "severe nerve disorder," he asked to remove from him the post of abbot of the Trinity-Sergius Desert near St. Petersburg. But no one has dismissed him from his post, they have given only leave for 11 months. So Saint Ignatius and endured all his life illnesses sent to him.
And St. Tikhon Zadonsky passed the strongest tests associated with the attacks of unaccountable longing, spiritual impotence.
We all the time divide the disease into noble and unworthy, we believe that the saints are above any nervous disorders. But the saints are holy because they endured everything that the Lord sent down to them, for any illness they remained faithful to God. The Lord, through His grace, helped to correctly walk this path and inherit the eternal salvation of the soul. But these saints understand all of us, understand those who bear the cross of nervous and mental disorders. These saints need to pray in the event of a depression.
