A lot of work, little sleep, lingering stress – and the eye begins to twitch. A condition familiar to many. How to help yourself if a nervous tick causes inconvenience or starts at the wrong moment? Tells Head of the Pain Clinic of the First City Hospital, neurologist Ekaterina Abramova:
– Many used to call twitching of the upper or lower eyelid tick. However, in neurology, this syndrome has a different name: myokimiya. But if the eyelid is shrinking completely or both eyes are blinking hard, then this is just a tick. Both conditions belong to the group of hyperkinesis and differ in the nature of involuntary movements: how many muscles are involved in the process, how quickly they contract, what amplitude, etc. At the same time, myocimia are not painful, usually occur amid stress or overwork and very rarely dangerous cause.
What happens when this happens? When we sit at the computer for a long time or read a lot, we look at the screens of the gadgets, there is an overwork in the muscles that move the eyeball, raise and lower the eyelid, and also the circular muscle that squeezes my eyes. Plus, the muscles of the forehead and other facial muscles tighten. Due to overvoltage and fatigue, the synthesis of neurotransmitters is disturbed – serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline and others – in the nerves that are responsible for these muscles. As a result, twitching occurs. Disruption of the production and exchange of neurotransmitters is directly related to fatigue and stress. And any person probably noticed for himself: he didn’t get enough sleep, reworked, was nervous – and his eyes began to twitch.
If the rest of the person feels good, then there is nothing to worry about. And to consult a doctor in this case is not necessary. Attacks safe miokimii can last a few seconds and repeated even every day for a week. There are people who have myocomia occur daily for several years. In this case, the person was examined, no pathology was detected. However, he clearly traces the connection: if you sit for a longer time at the TV, then the eye begins to twitch. If you walk down the street, everything passes. It turns out that in this way the body makes it clear that it’s time to relax. Therefore, if the eyelid twitches often, this is a clear signal: in the mode and lifestyle, you need to change something.
When twitching of the eyelid is accompanied by another symptom, such as a rise in temperature, a general deterioration of well-being, etc., it is worth referring to a specialist. Myocomia can occur on the background of thyroid dysfunction, deficiency of certain vitamins, accompany conjunctivitis and other diseases. If part of the face also joins the twitching of the eyelid, for example, the eyelid twitches and the angle of the mouth twitches, that is, the amplitude and involuntary muscle contraction zone increases, they become longer, more intense, pain appears, then in such a situation it is necessary for the neurologist to appear. After all, more serious causes of involuntary muscle contractions are possible: from multiple sclerosis to encephalitis (in the latter case, there will be an elevated temperature, deterioration of the general condition).
In addition, some drugs from the group of neuroleptics or stimulants of the nervous system, which are called nootropics, can provoke myokimia. In a person whose body is already in a state of overload (for example, during exams, urgent delivery of a project, etc.), taking such stimulants can cause neurons to hyperactivate and, as a result, local muscle twitches.
What if you start to twitch the eyelid?
Try lightly pressing your finger on the area just above the eyelid, near the corner of the eye and closer to the temple. You can gently massage the same area.
If myokimii annoying, constantly repeated, you can start with ordinary vitamins. The only condition is that it should be not just ascorbic, but a good vitamin-mineral complex. Alternatively, you can replicate glycine. This is a useful amino acid that can be drunk without the advice of a doctor. However, those with diabetes, you need to know that glycine slightly increases blood sugar.
Be sure to sleep and rest.
It is necessary to refuse for a while or reduce the dose of drinks containing large doses of caffeine: coffee, tea (both black and green), energy.
You can drink a course of soothing herbal preparations such as motherwort, valerian and others. However, if an important meeting is planned, you should not “pump up” valerian and similar drugs the day before: they can slow down cognitive abilities, but they will not give any guarantee that the eye will not twitch.
