Sodium chloride during pregnancy

Everyone knows that during pregnancy it is undesirable to resort to any medication. However, in some cases, medication is simply necessary. The fact that a sodium chloride dropper can be useful and whether it is safe for pregnant women will be discussed further.

Sodium chloride (or saline) is a drug containing chlorine and sodium ions in the same concentration as in human blood.

Their concentration is 0.9%. As a rule, sodium chloride is administered intravenously, although it can be used in other ways, for example, externally for washing the mucous membranes. If the doctor prescribes sodium chloride during pregnancy, then he is likely to strive to achieve one of two goals:

  1. Introduce some fluid into the body. It may be necessary for various purposes, for example, to reduce the concentration of toxic substances in the blood in case of poisoning.
  2. Some drugs are unsuitable for intravenous administration in undiluted form (or diluted give a more pronounced therapeutic effect). In this case, sodium chloride is used as a solvent.

Since most women during pregnancy are in an unstable emotional state, it is possible that saline may be prescribed as a placebo.

Effect of saline on the body

Sodium chloride is an inert drug. It is difficult to name a more versatile drug. Saline solution is widely used as part of complex therapy. Indications for its use can be the following situations:

  • the need to restore the patient’s blood volume as quickly as possible;
  • shock condition in which it is required to normalize microcirculation in various organs;
  • deficiency in the body of ions, which are contained in the preparation;
  • poisoning of infectious or non-infectious origin, in which the solution is part of detoxification therapy.

For most suggested persons, the dropper gives the impression of the most effective method of administering the drug.

The scope of saline intravenous is extremely wide. Since this drug is similar in composition to the composition of the blood, it can be prescribed during pregnancy. As a rule, he is not dangerous for the fetus. For example, in case of poisoning, toxic substances trapped in the blood may cause more harm to the health of the future mother and baby than a drip of saline, which can prevent or at least reduce the negative effects of poisoning.

Features of the use of saline

The amount of the drug to be administered is determined depending on the purpose of its use. In cases where it is used as a solvent for certain drugs, its amount is determined by the method of drug administration. For intramuscular administration may require from 5 ml of saline, and for drip can be used up to 400 ml of the drug.

The optimal dosage can be determined only by a doctor considering the required concentration of the main drug in the blood.

If during the pregnancy the future mother’s body needs an increase in blood volume or he needs detoxification, then, most likely, sodium chloride will be injected in a large volume (at least 800 ml).

If during labor a woman’s blood pressure is significantly reduced due to epidural analgesia, then she may need to inject 400 ml of saline. If the purpose of saline is associated with sodium deficiency in the body, then patients are encouraged to review the diet and add to it the products in which this element is contained. The body receives most of the sodium ions from ordinary table salt. No negative impact on the health of a pregnant woman and baby sodium chloride. Since this drug is as close as possible to the ionic composition of blood plasma, it has practically no contraindications. There was not a single case of an allergic reaction to the drug when administered intravenously to pregnant women. Thus, saline is widely applicable during pregnancy drug that allows you to solve many medical problems. However, even its harmlessness is not a reason to engage in self-treatment, especially during pregnancy. To eliminate this or that problem, which can be solved by medication, it is necessary to consult a doctor.
