Chance to get pregnant after menstruation

On whether women can become pregnant on such days, women think very often – if motherhood is planned and desired, then the sudden onset of an “interesting situation” after sexual contact during this “safe” period will not upset anyone.

But in those cases where, for a number of reasons, I would like to avoid this happy event – the consequences may not please.

Myths and reality about pregnancy

Half a century ago, the “calendar” method of protection was perhaps the most common. Many probably remember that “there was no sex” in Soviet Russia, so high-quality contraceptives for the majority turned out to be practically inaccessible. And doctors in one voice assured that the probability of getting pregnant immediately after menstruation is minimal. So the ladies calculated on the pocket calendar those “happy” days when they could fearlessly bestow their second half.

And since abortion was also not very welcome at that time, thanks to the “calendar” method and its disruptions, the country’s population steadily increased. Because pregnancy occurred not only among those women who prepared for the magical event in advance, but also among those who did not expect such a gift of fate at all!

Interestingly, despite all the examples, many women still seriously believe that on certain days the risk is minimized – it is usually considered that the safe period starts 3 days before the beginning of the month, continues during the menstruation and 3 more days after .

But let’s note right away: the minimum and zero opportunity are different things, because no one can guarantee that a certain woman at any particular moment will not fall into that same “happy” percentage for which the probability of getting pregnant after menstruation will turn into reality!

In terms of physiology

The low probability that it will be possible to start a new life in the first days after menstruation is related to the physiology of the woman.

Chance to get pregnant after menstruation

The menstrual cycle consists of four phases. The longest is the follicular, usually it lasts two weeks (plus or minus 4 days), at this time in the female body that very dominant follicle, which contains an ovum ready for fertilization, matures.

The ovulatory phase is characterized by the fact that the egg cell is fully mature and ready for fertilization. She is waiting only for the appearance of sperm – and this period lasts from about 12 to 17 days. Everything, of course, is very individual, but it is during this period of time, which is called the “fertile window”, the probability of pregnancy becoming greatest.

The uterus of the woman begins to intensively prepare to receive the embryo of the future life, the so-called luteal phase. At this time, the egg is still not gone, and although the hormonal background of the body has already changed qualitatively, conception is still quite possible.

If this does not happen, a kind of purification occurs at the end of the cycle – the menstruation itself, which, in fact, is the final phase of desquamation. In this case, the endometrial layer is separated and excreted from the body along with the unfertilized egg.

For conception, this moment is extremely unfavorable, a kind of aggressive hormonal background prevents the onset of pregnancy, even with unprotected contact. And it continues a few days after the discharge ends. That is why the question of how likely to become pregnant immediately after menstruation, many doctors answer the categorical “no.”

There are no rules without exceptions.

Women, trying to know the joy of motherhood, carefully calculate the days just to get pregnant – but for some reason this is not possible. The fact is that even during ovulation, the chances of successful fertilization of the egg and the fact that it will “take root” in the uterus do not exceed 30%. Against this background, the likelihood of pregnancy in the “safe” period seems to be completely illusory – something around 1-2%. But this is a small chance for those who are eager for motherhood, and for those who are forced to protect themselves is a very frightening percentile.

The fact is that in some women, due to some hormonal features, the menstrual cycle is not definitively established. Therefore, the moment of ovulation can shift, respectively, and conditionally safe days will not be fixed either. Therefore, in the event that the monthly may come not by the calendar, but with a shift of 5-7 days, you should be skeptical about the “calendar” method of protection. These women have a question – what is the probability of getting pregnant immediately after their periods? – The percentage of positive responses is growing exponentially.

The second common reason is a too short menstrual cycle. The fact is that all phase calculations are based on the standard cycle, which is usually 28-29 days. But in reality it happens that it lasts less than 25 days, while the menstruation itself does not have 3-4, but 7-8 days, and sometimes more. It turns out that the dangerous period comes not on the 12th day, but somewhere on the 8th. It turns out that menstruation has just ended (or still reminds of itself with bloody secretions!), And the egg has already matured and is ready for fertilization.

Chance to get pregnant after menstruation

And if we take into account that for many women, during menstruation, sexual desire sharply worsens, sexual intercourse at this time can be not only spontaneous, but also extremely passionate. What is the probability of getting pregnant after menstruation in this situation? I have to admit that it is very, very great!

“Resort” pregnancy

Any failure of the menstrual cycle is a hormonal jump in a woman’s body. How can he be called? Yes, a million reasons – taking medication or some kind of disease, unhealthy diet, or increased physical exertion. But most often the cause is a variety of stress, which in modern conditions torment us almost constantly.

Moreover, it should be noted that joyful excitements can lead to a cycle failure. For example, those related to a vacation trip. As a result, after a luxurious holiday, an unexpected pregnancy can easily occur somewhere on the seashore. And this provided that unprotected sex was exclusively in the “safe” period! So on vacation it is best not to trust only this method alone, but to use additionally some other method of contraception.

Vivacious “little friends” may surprise

But suppose that a woman’s cycle is “correct” and never goes astray. Is it possible to trust the “calendar” method for one hundred percent, and what is the probability of getting pregnant after menstruation in this case? Alas, nothing changes – a small chance remains all the same.

In this case, it all depends on the partner – in some sperm are sluggish and unviable, while in others they can boast of increased survivability. In some cases, spermatozoa, in anticipation of a mature egg, can retain their “fighting” qualities for a whole week, being in the genital tract all this time.

In fact, the fertilization process will occur, as expected, during the “fertile window”, but the woman will think that it happened much earlier – because unprotected sex was a week ago!

In life, there is always a place for unpredictable accidents.

There are quite rare cases when a woman has 2 eggs mature at one cycle at different times. This is called spontaneous ovulation. In fact, such women can become pregnant at any time, even during menstruation. Nobody can explain why this happens, but doctors assume a certain genetic predisposition. So the question whether there is a chance of getting pregnant after menstruation should be answered in the affirmative by all women who have had such cases in the family.

Chance to get pregnant after menstruation

Sometimes it seems that pregnancy occurred on “safe” days after menstruation. In fact, everything happened a lot earlier, as it should be, at the time of ovulation. The egg cell was fertilized and attached in the uterus. But for some reason, part of the epithelium is still separated, creating the illusion of a full menstruation. A woman has sex after her graduation – and after a while she learns that she will be a mother. And, of course, the “calendar” method fails.

In general, women who want to 100% exclude the possibility of pregnancy should not count the days in anxiety and eternal stress, and use another method of contraception. After all, the possibilities of medicine have leaped forward in the past 50 years!
