Edema – excessive accumulation of fluid in a certain part of the body and the retention of its excess. This phenomenon is familiar to almost every pregnant woman, most often the problem occurs in late periods. The danger to the health of the future mother and baby depends on the intensity of edema, the problem should be solved with the help of a doctor, because, first of all, it is necessary to understand the cause of edema and only then proceed to their treatment.
Edema during pregnancy – causes
As a rule, edema during pregnancy occurs from the fourth month, if the process began earlier, you should inform your doctor. This phenomenon may indicate a hidden pathology, it is possible that it will come to light at a later date and endanger the life of the baby and the health of the pregnant woman.
Most of the fair sex in the period of childbearing suffers from edema, but you can not look for the cause of this phenomenon in pregnancy, as a rule, it is about the wrong functioning of the kidneys, cardiovascular system, excess water in the body, excessive physical exertion. Often the swelling is caused by the fact that the constantly increasing uterus pinches the vessels, the blood feels significant obstacles when moving.
The future mother in the late stages of pregnancy swells the legs and arms, but there are cases when the swelling spreads throughout the body and the woman begins to quickly gain weight, this phenomenon is called “dropsy.” With dropsy, it is difficult to make a fist or bend a leg. Without treatment, “dropsy” can develop into the most dangerous form of edema – preeclampsia.
Gestosis – late toxicosis, in which there are severe edema, high blood pressure, high protein content in the urine, all of these factors significantly increase the risk of miscarriage or premature birth. Gestosis is treatable, but should be carried out in a hospital under the supervision of a specialist.
Hand swelling during pregnancy
In the later stages of pregnancy, the expectant mother may have swelling of the hands, most often this is noticeable by the way the fingers are bent, difficulties arise when wearing a ring.
It cannot be said that with such a phenomenon as swelling of the hands, one should rush in panic for help to the doctor, in the third trimester they are quite common. However, if the swelling is combined with high blood pressure, rapid weight gain, or create significant discomfort, it is necessary to consult on this with a specialist. In the normal course of pregnancy, the probable cause of hand edema is the abuse of salty or fatty foods and the pressure of the uterus on the vessels and ureters.
Swelling of the legs during pregnancy
Swelling of the legs in pregnant women is a very common phenomenon, the problem is that the body of the expectant mother accumulates sodium, which contributes to fluid retention in the body, as a result, edema appears.
Many women complain that the swelling appears in the afternoon and evening, this is easily explained: a long stay in a horizontal position (during a night’s rest) allows the fluid to be distributed throughout the body, so after sleep the swelling is almost imperceptible. After walking or staying on the legs for a long time, moisture rushes to the lower extremities, as a result, swelling appears in the ankles, lower legs and on the back of the feet. In some cases, swelling of the legs may be accompanied by high blood pressure, then it makes sense to consult a doctor in order not to provoke a severe form of preeclampsia.
Treatment and prevention of edema during pregnancy
There is an opinion that it is possible to get rid of edema by reducing the amount of fluid consumed, but in the case of pregnancy, this method is unlikely to be justified. Refusal from the liquid will cause the body to accumulate water and swelling may become stronger. For the first and second trimesters of pregnancy, it is recommended to drink no more than one and a half liters of fluid per day, not counting vegetables, soups, tea and
If you want to get rid of the swelling should not eat salty and fatty foods, the same recommendations exist for smoked meats, spicy dishes, carbonated drinks and coffee. Well, if once a week a pregnant woman spends a fasting day on juice and apples, in case this process is too complicated, you can add other fruits to your diet.
The future mother is recommended to rest at least 10 hours a day (at night), excluding day rest (1.5-2 hours). Before bedtime, you need to put a roller under your feet, fine, if they will rise above the body.
With extreme leg fatigue, you can do warm baths, foot massage. Do not forget about systematic walks in the fresh air. Sometimes, doctors recommend herbal teas that have a diuretic effect, and vitamins that strengthen the walls of blood vessels to improve blood circulation. From folk remedies, swelling removes the infusion of dried apricots (pour boiling water overnight, drink it in the morning half an hour before meals).
Whatever means is chosen as a remedy for edema, its use should be discussed with your doctor, since pregnancy is too important a period for health risks.
