Every mother wants her baby to develop properly and according to age. In order to worry and worry less, mom should understand the main stages in the development of a child under one year old. One of the first questions for young moms is when the baby starts to hold its head?
The ability to retain the head is an important indicator of the development of the baby, the first serious skill to control one’s own body. Normally, the child confidently holds his head in a horizontal and vertical position by 3 months. Nowadays, when tight swaddling that is detrimental to muscle development is practically not practiced, and they actively engage with babies, they do massage, children can often hold the head as early as 2 months. So, consider how this important skill develops.
Nature is very wise, and despite the apparent fragility, a healthy, full-term baby immediately after birth, if it is placed on the tummy, can lift and turn its head to the side so as not to suffocate. Despite this, a child can only lift the head for a few seconds – the neck muscles are still too weak, and the head of a newborn is large enough compared to the body – for muscles this is a serious burden. Therefore, in any manipulation of the baby, whether it be carrying on hands, bathing or feeding, you need to hold the head of the baby so as not to damage the cervical vertebrae.
We help baby
From about 3 weeks (when the umbilical wound heals), it is very important to spread the baby more often on the tummy. This is the first "physical exercise" can be carried out before feeding and no earlier than 30-40 minutes after feeding, otherwise you can provoke regurgitation. This situation is not only useful for the development of the baby, but also helps in the fight against colic and contributes to the discharge of gases. Kids often do not like to lie on their stomachs – this is a serious burden for them. Therefore, it is extremely important to give the child the motivation to be in this position. A good option is to put the baby on his tummy on his chest. On the one hand, the child feels the warmth of a loved one (it can be both mom and dad – for dad it is also an opportunity to get close to the child), and on the other – it receives an incentive to lift the head to look at you. To help the child lift the head, you can put his arms bent at the elbows or your palm under his breast. Exercise should begin to perform, starting with a few seconds, and stop as soon as you see that the baby is tired. Let the position on the tummy is associated only with joy. Of course, in no case can not be left unattended child, lying on his stomach.
Already from 1 month of a child’s life, you can begin to massage him (invite a specialist or do it yourself – you decide), shake the baby lying on his tummy, fitball and, of course, from birth he has to communicate with the baby – tell poems and podeshki, sing songs and just talk as often as you like him! Affectionate communication causes the baby from about 3 weeks "revitalization complex"during which all the muscles work, including those responsible for the ability to hold the head.
And if the child holds his head in a month?
If your child keeps his head well already in 2 weeks – 1 month, this, unfortunately, is no reason for joy. In this case, you should consult with a neurologist,
At the age of about 6 weeks, the child after long "workouts" can already raise the head by 45 degrees and hold it up to 1 minute. By 8 weeks your baby will try to keep his head already and in an upright position, and when pulling on the handles you will notice that the baby is trying to keep it on a par with the body.
From 2 to 3 months, the ability to keep the head is improved – as in the position lying on the tummy, and vertically in the hands of mom or dad. Of course, you must continue to control the position of the head,
At the age of 3 months, it is already possible to safely carry the child upright without holding the back of the head,
At 3 months, you can check the baby’s support on a hard surface when "standing" – the baby can already lean on the legs for about 40 seconds – 1 minute. After the child has mastered the ability to hold his head upright, you can start doing the exercise. "dancing" – bring the child to the hard surface, holding the armpit (but in no case do not put with full support) and immediately lift.
A 4-month-old baby not only holds his head, but also lifts his torso, lying on his tummy. Also, at this age, the child may already roll over from back to side.
By 5 months, the child develops a coup from the back to the tummy, and by 6 months he usually learns to roll over from the belly to the back. By the age of 5-6 months when doing the exercise "dancing" the baby no longer bends the legs at the knees, although he can not truly stand.
At 5-6 months, the child, who is often laid out on the tummy, usually likes to be in that position. Lying on his stomach, he leans on his hands and examines the surrounding objects. The gradual and proper development of the ability to lie on the tummy and hold the head is the basis for the development of the crawling skill, which normally occurs by 6-7 months.
The baby does not hold its head at 2 or 3 months.
What to do? Or if the child has ceased to keep his head lying on his stomach? Should I worry? How to teach a child to keep his head?
Panic, of course, is not necessary. However, to consult with a neurologist, if the child is already 3 months old, it is necessary. The reasons why the child does not hold his head, although he was already 3 months old:
- the child suffered a birth trauma or experienced hypoxia during childbirth (usually as a result of prolonged, severe or pathological childbirth, a long anhydrous period. Often, hypoxia transferred during childbirth is determined by ultrasound screening carried out in 1 month of the child’s life);
- the child was rarely laid out on the tummy, as a result of which he simply had no opportunity to strengthen the neck muscles;
- the baby was born premature or lagging behind in physical development;
- The child’s muscles are too weak – doctors call it hypotonic. In this case, the massage is especially necessary for the child.
In addition to the visit to the specialist, continue to follow the above recommendations – lay out the baby on the tummy, do massage and gymnastics.
The child holds his head on one side
It happens that a child holds his head on one side. This is NOT scary, but requires correction. The cause of this phenomenon can be, in the worst case, torticollis, but more often it is an increased muscle tone on one side of the neck (sometimes it is called a false torticollis,
- make the baby a soft neck massage;
- carry out water procedures (water relaxes the muscles);
- monitor the position of the child in a dream, turn from side to side. You can put a special roller under the cheek or just a folded diaper;
- in the period of wakefulness must be done "unloved" the side is more attractive, hanging toys in this zone that the baby will like.
If your child begins to keep the head in time, it shows that he is developing properly. Doesn’t all mothers dream about this? And if you see any irregularities in the development of your child, hurry to consult with your doctor – he will calm you down if you are worried for nothing, and prescribe the necessary treatment if the child really needs it.
