12 principles of breastfeeding

Let’s start with banalities: without water, the human body is able to exist for several days. It is an adult human organism. As for children, for them fluid deficiency even more dangerous – the metabolism is more intense, the motor activity is higher, respectively, and fluid loss very significant. The principles of dressing up children that are inherent in our mentality — which are where mom and dad are wearing T-shirts, there’s a child in a blouse — contribute to the growth of the aforementioned losses — it is clear that sweating reinforces the need for life-giving moisture. It would seem, well, what is there to argue: water the baby it is necessary, especially in the hot season, because both overheating and its indispensable companion fluid deficiency – extremely dangerous. And the excess liquid allows the child to cope with overheating through the release of heat during the formation and evaporation of sweat. Nevertheless, in numerous guides on the cultivation of infants in the first year of life, information is often provided that the child does not need additional drinking — they say, mother’s milk or a modern mixture is quite enough for a safe and healthy existence. These recommendations often apply to children in general, and poor parents are tormented by the question: water or not water? From the point of view of common sense – water, of course, but they are writing. In this regard, I would still like to explain something to doubting parents – so that it became clear where, as they say, “legs grow” with valuable instructions about drinking is harmful. In 1989, WHO / UNICEF adopted a well-known declaration called “10 principles for successful breastfeeding”. In this declaration there is a principle number 6, which sounds like this: “Do not give the newborn any other food or drink, except for breast milk, except in cases stipulated by medical indications.” It is impossible to object to this quite logical rule. It is clear that sucking a baby’s maternal breast is the best way to increase and stabilize milk production. And if instead of mom to give some water, so highly probable that soon breastmilk will have to be forgotten. That is, there is a very specific stage in the life of a child when it is not necessary to give him water, a newborn period in combination with a shortage of milk in the mother. Wants to drink – let him suck and stimulate the production of milk. EVERYTHING! There are no other contraindications for the child to drink. The paradox is that WHO, in its declaration, speaks specifically about newborns, and numerous recommendations, under the guise of the authority of this esteemed organization, spread the advice “not to drink” to children in general! Let me remind you that from the point of view of the same WHO, a newborn is a child from birth to 28 days. The conclusions are obvious – water on health! In any case, a healthy child should not be forced drink water or other liquids. The task of the parents is to offer, and the child will decide whether to drink or not to drink. It is especially important to offer those who are not able to ask. Relevance drinking the higher, the warmer than the drier, the greater the loss of fluid (for example, sweating during exercise, excess clothing). Wherever you are – on a walk, on the beach, in the walls of your own apartment – you should always have a vessel with a liquid for drinking at hand. Do not forget that boiled water has nothing to do with the natural option of drinking – no living thing drinks boiled water. If it’s just water, then children up to a year – mineral, neutral taste, non-carbonated, and those who are older, especially in heat and with excessive sweating – can be a little salty, and if they are, it can also be carbonated. There are plenty of safe and healthy drinking options for children. It is clear that, using any drink, one should take into account the individual preferences of a particular child, and the material capabilities of the parents, and the tendency of a certain part of infants to allergic reactions. Possible options are compotes from fresh or frozen fruits and berries; very convenient and useful, given the large amount of potassium, – dried fruit in general, raisins and dried apricots in particular. A lot of companies focusing on baby food, produce numerous teas based on herbs, berries, etc. And if you can afford it, drink it to your health. Never forget about signs of overheating and fluid deficiency. The main ones are rare urination, dry skin, tongue and mucous membranes. These symptoms, especially in summer, are very dangerous. Therefore, I repeat: drink, more precisely, water, to your health!
