Onions-slizun often used as a salad onion. Salads from it can be cooked during the whole garden season. Onions are put in soups and second courses, used as a spice. Surplus greens can be dried and salted, onions – pickled. And if the onion leaves freeze, the onion-slizun will retain its useful properties in full. This is not the only way to use the beneficial properties of onion skins in the winter. If you wish, you can have its fresh greens even when there is snow in the yard. To do this, it is enough to dig out its rhizomes in autumn and plant it in a spacious pot with fertile soil on the windowsill. Although the slizun does not have a pronounced rest period, unlike shallot and bulb onions, it is better to withstand a pot with a set rhizome for about a month in the cold, for example, a basement. After the onion grows and throws away new leaves, and you will always have a tasty source of iron, vitamins and other useful substances on hand. If you don’t like the garden on the windowsill, you can pick the tender leaves of onion-garlic taste almost as soon as snow melts at a time when other vegetables have not yet grown. Cold-resistant slizun is not afraid of low temperatures and the first grows leaves, first last year, after – young. At this time, they are especially tender and tasty, their useful properties especially in price. The most intense growth of leaves takes place in spring and summer, before the appearance of the peduncle. If the onions have enough moisture, its greens will not become hard until the very autumn, and it will be just as desirable.

How to grow onion slizun: planting and care

Growing slizuna not burdensome. A perennial vegetable practically does not freeze out in winter, keeping up to -40 ° C without shelter. On fertile, rich in humus and moderately moist soil, it retains its yield for 5–6 years. Diseases and pests are rarely affected. In order to avoid degeneration, it is not recommended to keep it in one place for more than 4 years. For planting, prepare a sunny or semi-shady place, where earlier cabbage, potatoes, tomato, cucumbers, and radishes could be. Do not plant slizun on ridges after bulbous plants. For cultivation, sandy and light loamy soils are considered to be the best, in which thawed and ground water does not stagnate in spring and during rains. Excess moisture prevents access of air and the bow dies. On problem areas, onion slizun can be grown in high beds. Poor slug fails on acidic soils, its leaves acquire an unpleasant bitter taste. To avoid this, the soil is preliminated, dolomite flour or chalk is added. In the fall, the soil is filled with humus, rotted manure, compost in the amount of 8 kg / m2, while processing in spring you can add another half of the bucket. We also need mineral fertilizers – superphosphate, potassium salt, trace elements – they are used according to the instructions on the package. Nitrogen fertilizers are applied only in early spring, excluding fresh manure. It is useful to grow siderats on a plot intended for planting onions. This will improve the structure of the soil, enrich it, eliminate the accumulated diseases and pests. In the garden, 40–30 cm rows are made; the distance in the row is 15–20 cm (depending on the variety). Rhizomes grow in a semicircle, eventually displacing other plants, even weeds. If it is necessary, for example, in perennials in a flower garden, then the onion growth process can be limited by any known method – plant onions in prikatannye plastic pots or bottles (without bottom) or restrict planting with the buried side edges. More often, they simply prepare a new place and plant plants. Cut onions for a season up to 4 times, so that the leaves can grow again before frosts, and the plant is prepared for winter. Usually, early sorts of leaf grows in 30 days, in the middle ripening – in 40. The leaves are not completely removed, but selectively cut, reaching 25–30 cm. They are cut together with the rhizome. This does not harm the plant, but contributes to its growth. In addition, the periodic cutting of leaves contributes to the appearance of more valuable from a dietary point of view leaves. They have more sugar and ascorbinka, they are more tender. On young, not developed rosettes, leaves are cut off selectively at a distance of 5-7 cm above the surface of the earth. Photo: onions, slizun, growing from seeds, second year → In early spring, onions are fed with ammonium nitrate and potassium salt at 5 g / m2, superphosphate – 10 g / m2. So do after cutting. Use and organic – watered with diluted slurry or infusion of herbs. If the onions are grown for nutritional purposes, the peduncle can be removed so that the nutrients are used for the formation of greens, and not for flowering and seed ripening. Onion care includes watering (especially in hot, dry weather), weeding, loosening of the soil and top dressing, as well as periodic cutting of old leaves and peduncles. If all this is not done, the onion will survive, but its leaves will harden and lose some of their beneficial properties. Facilitates care and has a beneficial effect on the plant soil mulching. In order to obtain early production, it is possible to grow a sliz in heated greenhouses.

Replicate slizun can be seeds and dividing the bush. The vegetative breeding method is less labor intensive and gives a quick harvest – greens are harvested as they grow already for the next season. Propagation by seeds is carried out, if there is no place to take any planting material, as well as for testing new varieties. Crop grown from onion seeds will have to wait two years, and planting will require additional care, and the onion yield will exceed the multiplied by division.

Reproduction by dividing the bush. It is possible to plant (multiply) onion-slizun in August-September or in early spring. To do this, dig two or three year old bushes and divide the rhizome into parts. Since the nutrients accumulate in the rhizome, and not in the false bulbs, each delenka should have a part of the rhizome and at least 3-4 bulbs. The roots are shortened and planted in a prepared place. Autumnal division of the bush is a great breeding method for summer residents. Already in early spring it will be possible to pick the first greens.

Cultivation from seeds of onion-slizun can be propagated by seeds, by growing them yourself (no hybrids) or by buying them in a store. In both cases, growing from seeds is carried out according to the same scheme. Photo: onions-slizun, growing from seeds, seedlings If you plan to collect your own seeds, the leaves are not cut off from the best bushes selected for this. Seeds are harvested in September after yellowing of the peduncle. Umbrellas fold to dry, the collected seeds remain viable for up to 4 years. Sowing can be carried out from the beginning of March (seedling method) to mid-summer, so that young plants can take root before frost. In open ground, seeds are sown from late April. To the seeds quickly ascended, they are soaked for almost a day, then dried. Sow in shallow well-moistened grooves up to
