Turmeric Benefits

What is the use

The active ingredient in curry seasoning and curcuma, which determines its color is curcumin. This antioxidant belongs to the family of curcuminoids – polyphenolic compounds of bright yellow color. Proved effective in combating infections, reducing cholesterol, solving problems with digestion and slowing the spread of certain forms of cancer.

It was also possible to establish a positive effect of this substance in the prevention of such serious diseases as Alzheimer’s disease and myocardial hypertrophy, which are considered to be responsible for free radicals.

On the basis of turmeric root produce food dye called tumerik (E100). The curcumin concentration in it is 1-5%. Tumeric (light yellow) is often added to butter, industrial margarine and inexpensive cheeses.

Anti-inflammatory properties

Workers at Stanford University have said that turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties and may be useful in the treatment and healing of wounds, in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, eczema and psoriasis.

The same properties make the popular Indian spice an attractive remedy in relieving the painful symptoms of arthritis – say doctors from the University of Maryland.

For their good antibacterial properties, turmeric is increasingly being incorporated into therapeutic creams and ointments against various bacterial infections and parasites.

For digestion

Like many other oriental spices, turmeric enhances the secretion of bile in the gallbladder, which in some cases can help normalize digestion. Israeli doctors have proven the effectiveness of curcumin in the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, including nausea, bloating, increased gas formation, loss of appetite, stomach discomfort, etc.

It is not surprising that turmeric root was included in the list of herbs approved in Germany for treating digestive problems and solving general health issues. Officially recommended dose was 1 tsp. 2-3 times a day.

From excess cholesterol

The same American scientists suggest that curcumin reduces the concentration of “bad” cholesterol in the bloodstream, prevents its accumulation on the walls of the arteries and the formation of atherosclerotic plaques – the main cause of the formation of blood clots with subsequent strokes and heart attacks.

From liver fibrosis

American professor Anping Chen from St. Louis empirically found that the natural substance curcumin helps in the prevention and treatment of liver fibrosis, which is not associated with alcohol dependence.

This bright idea was presented to the professor by Chinese healers who have used turmeric for medicinal purposes since ancient times. Chen leads a research team that studies the molecular mechanisms of fibrosis and develops natural therapies.

Non-alcoholic fibrosis occurs on the background of obesity or type II diabetes. Patients have elevated levels of leptins and blood sugar. This, according to American scientists, leads to increased production of collagen by liver cells and its fibrous changes. It has been experimentally proven that curcumin inhibits the negative effect of leptin molecules and protects the liver from fibrosis.

Ayurvedic tea

Mix 1/8 tsp. turmeric and 1/4 cup water. Add 3 cardamom pods as desired. Boil the mixture over low heat for 6 minutes, then add 1 cup of milk and 2 tbsp. l almond oil. Wait for the first signs of boiling. Remove the mixture from the heat and let cool, then add a few drops of honey or maple syrup to improve the taste.

This tea is an excellent tool for blood purification, normalization of menstruation, prevention of diabetes and cancer.

To clean the airways

1-2 hours l. mix turmeric with a glass of cold or hot water and drink instead of regular tea.

This drink is effective for asthma and colds, helps to clear the nasal passages and lungs from mucus.

Infusion of freckles and age spots

For the preparation of cosmetic infusion 1 tsp. Combine turmeric with cucumber or lemon juice (they have whitening properties).

This tool is applied to the skin for a total of 15 minutes, and then washed off. The process must be repeated daily, until the freckles and pigment spots turn white.

Possible harm and contraindications

  1. Only large doses of turmeric or purified curcumin (several grams per day) for a long time can cause health problems, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In severe cases, a gastric ulcer may develop and the clinical picture may worsen with gallbladder diseases.
  2. Curcumin prevents blood from clotting, which increases the risk of bleeding in patients undergoing surgery, or those taking blood thinning drugs. If you are taking warfarin, aspirin, ibuprofen, or other drugs with similar properties, consult your doctor.
