Analogue prednisolone. By activity, it is close to prednisone, but practically does not possess mineralocorticoid (sodium retention) activity, which ensures better tolerability. It is slowly absorbed by intramuscular injection and has a longer lasting effect than hydrocortisone and prednisone.
Indications for use
Collagenoses (common name for diseases characterized by diffuse lesions of the connective tissue and blood vessels), rheumatism, infectious nonspecific polyarthritis (inflammation of several joints), bronchial asthma, acute lymphoblastic and myeloblastic leukemia (malignant blood tumor from bone marrow cells) and infectious mononucleosis ( acute viral disease occurring with a high rise in temperature, an increase in the palatine lymph nodes, liver), neurodermatitis (skin diseases caused by a violation central nervous system functions), eczema (neuroallergic skin disease characterized by weeping, itchy inflammation) and other skin diseases, various allergic diseases, Addison’s disease (decreased adrenal function), acute adrenal cortex insufficiency, hemolytic anemia (increased erythrocyte breakdown in the blood), glomerulonephritis (kidney disease), acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), shock and collapse (a sharp drop in blood pressure) during surgical interventions; to suppress the reaction of rejection during homotransplantation of organs and tissues (transplantation of organs or tissues of one person to another).
Mode of application
In case of bronchial asthma, it is prescribed orally, starting from 12-40 mg per day; maintenance dose – 4-12 mg per day. In chronic polyarthritis (inflammation of several joints) is prescribed, starting with 6-20 mg per day. When rheumatism begins with a dose of 0.8-1.5 mg / kg, then it is gradually reduced. Depending on the disease, the daily dose is on average 0.004-0.048 g of methylprednisolone. Large doses may be prescribed for multiple sclerosis (systemic disease of the membranes of the brain and spinal cord nerve cells) – up to 0.2 g / day, brain edema – 0.2 g / day, organ transplantation (transplant) – up to 0.007 g / day. If the drug was used for a long time, its cancellation should be made gradually. Doses are selected individually. With long-term treatment (to achieve the effect of the drug with a minimum of side effects), it is possible to receive (in the mornings) a dose every day equal to twice the daily dose. Large doses of methylprednisolone are used in the treatment of especially severe forms of lupus nephritis (lupus nephritis – damage to the glomeruli of the kidney in systemic lupus erythematosus).
Retention of sodium and water in the body, loss of potassium, rise in blood pressure, muscle weakness, osteoporosis (malnutrition of bone tissue, accompanied by an increase in its fragility), damage to the stomach walls, reduced body resistance to infection, mental disorders, suppression of adrenal function, menstrual disorder.
. Same as with prednisone. The drug is also not prescribed to children under 12 years.
Available in tablets of 0.004 g (4 mg), 0.016 g (16 mg), 0.032 g (32 mg) and 0.1 g (100 mg).
