Preparations with chondroitin and glucosamine belong to the so-called symptom-modifying agents. In medicine, they are widely used for the pathogenetic treatment of osteoarthritis deformans (OA). Drugs in this group slow down the rate of development of the disease, prevent the destruction of hyaline cartilage, prevent involvement in the process of pathological destruction of healthy joints.
Symptom-modifying agents are much slower than local anesthetics, muscle relaxants, NSAIDs and corticosteroids. However, the effect of their use lasts longer (4-8 weeks or more).
Advantages of combination therapy with cholesterol
It is important to know! Doctors in shock: "An effective and affordable remedy for joint pain exists. " Read more.
Preparations with glucosamine (HA) and chondroitin sulfate (CH) are the most popular among all chondroprotectors. It is proved that the simultaneous use of these two substances is much more effective monotherapy. As it turned out, combined action of cholesterol and HA increases the production of glycosaminoglycans chondrocytes in 97% of cases, and the use of only one of them – in 32%.
There is no definite recognition of the effectiveness of chondroprotectors in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Many authors have questioned the results of clinical studies, citing the significant heterogeneity of patient groups, the small number of samples, or an incorrect assessment of the outcomes of the disease. In 1994, the American College of Rheumatology (American College of Rheumatology) officially declared the uselessness of chondroprotectors in OA.
We recommend viewing a purely scientific analysis of the sources of research on the effectiveness of chondroprotectors from Boris Tsatsulin:
The European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) confirms that chondroprotectors have symptomatic and even structurally modifying action.
Symptom-modifying effect is the ability of the drug to influence the symptoms of the disease, to facilitate the patient’s well-being. Structural modifying action is the ability of the chondroprotector to influence the structure and function of cartilage tissue.
By themselves, the GA and HS “work” poorly. There is no point in using preparations containing only chondroitin or only glucosamine. They have chondroprotective effect, but they do not help in the fight against osteoarthrosis. The effect of the combined drugs is much better.
If your doctor has prescribed a drug from the group of chondroprotectors, look at its composition. Try not to buy drugs that contain only one component. In any pharmacy, you can find more effective combination products.
How do combined chondroprotectors
With simultaneous use of glucosamine and chondroitin mutually reinforce, complement each other’s actions. They affect different metabolic processes, which makes their combined use particularly appropriate.
Exogenous HA is actively involved in the synthesis of hyaluronic acid and glycosaminoglycans, prevents the formation of free radicals, enzymes that destroy cartilage, protects articular cartilage from the destructive action of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Glucosamine has a moderate analgesic, anti-inflammatory effect.
Even "running" joint problems can be cured at home! Just do not forget to smear it once a day.
Cholesterol stimulates the synthesis of proteoglycans, collagen, hyaluronic acid, inhibits the activity of hyaluronidase, peptidase and elastase – enzymes that destroy cartilage tissue. Chondroitin sulfate maintains the viscosity of the synovial fluid, retains moisture in the thick of cartilage, has an analgesic, anti-inflammatory, regenerating effect.
Effects of chondroprotectors:
- stimulation of chondrocytes – cells that synthesize glucosaminoglycans, collagen, proteinoglycans, hyaluronic acid and other substances necessary for the normal functioning of the joints;
- inhibition of the activity of lysis-somal enzymes that destroy articular cartilage, accelerating the development of osteoarthrosis;
- reducing the intensity of pain in the joints;
- decrease in the activity of inflammatory processes in the synovial membrane and other articular tissues;
- increasing the resistance of chondrocytes to the negative effects of pro-inflammatory cytokines, corticosteroids, NSAIDs.
Video from Boris Tsatsulin about the side effects of chondroprotectors:
Chondroitin with glucosamine for joints is more effective when used systemically. Most often, the combined chondroprotectors prescribed in the form of tablets or capsules. All ointments, gels with these substances are ineffective in the treatment of OA.
Drugs that contain chondroitin and glucosamine
Combination drugs belong to the III generation of chondroprotectors. These tools are effective in the treatment of osteoarthritis, in the fight against unpleasant symptoms, progressive destruction of cartilage tissue. The first generation of chondroprotectors includes drugs on a natural basis, the second – monodrugs.
Now actively advertised ointment Hondroksid, which does not contain glucosamine. Try not to buy – neither her nor any other ointment or gels with chondroprotectors. Give preference to tablet forms of drugs. If you are prescribed a medicine containing only chondroitin, try to find other analogues.
