Cat diarrhea is a symptom characterized by rapid bowel movements with the release of liquid feces. The volume of bowel movements is less than usual. Feces can become black or red in the presence of bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract. If the cat has a parasitic disease, accompanied by diarrhea, large worms can be seen without special equipment.
You should take into account the nature of the usual feces in the cat, before assessing the features of the stool in diseases. To do this, you need to carefully monitor your pet, mark the reaction of the chair to a particular product, a change of scenery or stress. The habitual feces can be quite different in different cats.
Often, bowel abnormalities occur in animals after cleaning a coat, rug, or changing the contents of a bowel movement container. With diarrhea, the cat begins to lose weight, weaken. There is lack of mobility, lack of appetite, apathy in a sick animal. Dehydration should be prevented by drinking plenty of water.
Causes of diarrhea in cats
These animals are very sensitive to emotional experiences, relocations, climate change, or simply the home environment. For all changes, a cat may develop inflammation of the colon wall, which is accompanied by diarrhea.
The nervous state of a pet can also be affected by the appearance of new people in the house, fear or the presence of a dog in the cat’s territory. Moreover, diarrhea syndrome will manifest itself immediately, after two or three hours after the onset of a stressful situation.
Do not forget about the likelihood of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites. They all provoke diarrhea, and sometimes vomiting, in cats.
The cause of diarrhea in a masterful pet can be a change in nutrition, a transition from one food to another, an eaten spoiled product or a foreign object.
In addition, intestinal tumors, erosion of the mucous membrane of the digestive tract are also manifested by bloody diarrhea. It is characterized by black color on the similarity of coffee grounds or admixtures of scarlet blood. In this case, the trip to the veterinarian should be immediate. Damage to the rectum is accompanied by discharge of not yet clotted blood. Gastric bleeding is characterized by dark staining of feces.
Sometimes cats are sensitive to a number of antibacterial drugs that can harm the intestinal microflora and thus cause severe long-term diarrhea. After three to four days, diarrhea gradually decreases and then disappears. If antibacterial treatment is necessary, it is recommended to give the cat yogurt or medicine that supports the normal composition of the microflora – lactobacillin. The drug is effective as a good restorative when dysbacteriosis has already occurred due to antibiotics.
In addition, diarrhea in cats occurs in severe general diseases, such as panleukopenia, that is, a catastrophic decrease in immunity due to the absence of white cells in the blood. Now a special vaccine is widely used to prevent the disease.
Other possible causes of diarrhea in cats are chronic kidney or liver disease, peritonitis, poisoning, and the animal immunodeficiency virus.
Possible causative agents of diarrhea in cats
Coccidia is the most frequent causative agent of inflammatory bowel disease in cats, provoking a long-term diarrheal syndrome. The parasite belongs to the simplest malware and has the appropriate treatment.
Tape tapeworm has a segmental structure, visually similar to rice grains. The pathogen can be seen without specialized equipment in the animal’s anus or in its faeces. Infection with tapeworm occurs through fleas.
If kittens suffer from diarrhea
Kittens experience diarrheal syndrome often with poor tolerance to cow’s milk. This is because in the digestive tract of young individuals a special enzyme responsible for the breakdown of carbohydrates has not yet been developed. Also, the cause may be the presence of an allergic reaction to cow’s milk protein. As a method of struggle, when feeding kittens, it is desirable to replace milk with mixtures specially developed for this purpose. Allergy to dairy products can be observed in adult cats.
When the reaction of diarrhea to changes in nutrition should return to the previous diet. If it is still necessary to change it, you need to transfer the animal to a new feed gradually and in small portions.
With the duration of diarrhea in kittens for more than a week and no effect on symptomatic treatment (hunger and heavy drinking, elimination of causes of phobias and stress), you should contact a veterinarian to eliminate organic damage to the gastrointestinal tract, as well as to study for infectious diseases.
Examination of the cat and diagnosis
The veterinarian will first conduct a full examination of the animal, ask the owners about the nutritional patterns, circumstances and possible stresses of the cat that precede the diarrhea. Laboratory studies will help to clarify the cause of the disease, the degree of dehydration and the stage of inflammation.
In order to verify the integrity of the walls of the digestive tract or, conversely, to prove the presence of injuries, tumors or foreign bodies in it, contrast radiography is performed. The method is relatively safe and informative.
If you suspect helminth infection, feces are analyzed. The research method is microscopic. In a smear, worms and parasite eggs are detected.
If kittens are worried about diarrhea, accompanied by loss of body weight and dehydration, they should be given a stool test at the age of one and a half months. This should be done in the absence of a specific pathology. If the test result is negative, you need to repeat it at 6 and 9 months for complete confidence in the kitten’s health.
For kittens, diarrhea can cause rectal prolapse. Most often, with timely treatment, the process is reversible. If the fallout is not eliminated after the pet’s recovery, surgical intervention is necessary.
Treatment of diarrhea in cats
If the diarrhea is short-lived, it is sufficient to alleviate the symptoms and improve the general condition of the animal. Before deciding on a treatment strategy, it is first recommended to stop feeding the cat for at least a day. Often, two days of hunger strike are enough to completely cure diarrhea.
Feeding the cat during an illness should be done carefully, using dietary meat – chicken breast or chicken. Portions should be small, the meat finely chopped or ground. You can add boiled egg to the diet.
Koepectat is a medicine used for diarrhea in cats. Giving it to a sick animal should be thrice per milliliter three times a day. You can use koapectat for a short time.
As mentioned above, in violation of intestinal microflora diarrhea can be very long and painful. To restore the biocenosis of the digestive tract, it is necessary after taking the main course of therapy to take lactobacillin. In addition, fermented milk products such as ryazhenka and yoghurts are good as complementary foods.
The feed additive Lignitin, will help a fluffy friend to cope with intoxication in case of diarrhea after poisoning.
