The program of climbing the route Northern Traverse

  • Day 1 Arrival

Group arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), meeting of the tour participants by the representative of Altezza Travel and transfer to the hotel, according to the fare. The hotel has everything you need for your comfortable stay: cozy rooms, hot water, polite staff, swimming pool and internet. In the evening, our staff will hold a briefing with you and check your willingness to climb.

Note: Check-in at the hotel starts at 14:00.

In the morning, a guide with your escort team will arrive at your hotel, meet you and hold a short briefing, after which you will have a long drive (about 3-4 hours) to the western entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park – the gate of Londorossi (2360 m). After a short procedure of receiving mountain permits and registering with the rescue service, the group will continue to take high-altitude vehicles on off-road vehicles to the level of 3,500 meters, from this point you will see for the first time the most beautiful panoramas on the Shira plateau.

The transition from the point of entry to your first high-altitude camp, Shira-1 (3505 m), has practically no climb and is not physically too difficult, thanks to which you can correctly begin the process of high-altitude acclimatization. Before you come to the camp, our certified escort team will prepare everything you need, set up tents and prepare dinner for you.

This will be your first day at this altitude, so it is strongly recommended to follow the following instructions:

  • Refuse caffeine and alcohol
  • Drink 4 liters or more of water daily (it is better to drink a little, but often)
  • If signs of altitude sickness occur, drink Diamox tablet. Most climbers take Diamoks in the morning, before the start of the ascent, which reduces the discomfort of mountain sickness. It is recommended to consult with your doctor for allergenic reactions.

At night, you may experience an uncomfortable feeling of acclimatization: due to a decrease in the activity of breathing, oxygen enters even less than during the day, and taking into account the height, the probability of nausea and headache increases several times. Therefore, be attentive to your condition and when the first signs of altitude sickness appear, contact the guide.

After breakfast, we leave the camp of Shira 1 (3505 m) and make a short transition from a moderate climb to the next camp of Shira 2 (3900 m).

The first few days will be held at a very easy, relaxed and slow pace. No hurry. It is a slow pace of ascent, long rest stops and the consumption of large amounts of water will help the body to acclimatize better and faster.

After breakfast, we leave the Shira 2 camp (3900 m) and begin the ascent to the key point of the route – the Lava Tower (4630 m). You will have many ascents and descents, after which you will stop for the first time in the camp at an altitude of more than 4600 m. It will be difficult and you may experience some problems with well-being, but for successful acclimatization you need to spend at least 1-2 hours here, so organize lunch.

After lunch, you will climb a little higher and then start a simple descent to the Moir Hut camp, this camp is located on the way to the northern part of Kilimanjaro.

On this day, you will find a long enough, but at the same time, an easy transition. After a short steep ascent from the Moir Valley, you will begin to go around the northern slope of Kilimanjaro, as well as on the way to Lava Taeur, along the trail there will be alternating descents and ascents, without abrupt ascents. This route passes close to the border with Kenya, so you can see the stunning scenery of the Tsavo and Amboselli valleys.

You have to complete the trekking along the northern slope of Kilimanjaro and stop at Camp Cave 3, where the route merges with the classic Rongai route. On this day, you will find a shorter transition than the previous one, and by this time the body will already be fully acclimatized to an altitude of 4000 meters, which will positively affect your well-being.

On this day, it is necessary to make a trekking to the Skul Hut assault camp (4750 m). Tracking is not too difficult, the main thing is to choose the right pace so as not to lose strength before storming the summit of Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival at the camp, we advise you to sleep, avoid physical exertion and drink as much water as possible, because at night you will have to climb Uhuru Peak (5895 m).

Change of heights: Camp Cave 3 (3870 m) – Skul Hat Camp (4750 m) Trekking distance: 5 km Trekking time: 4-5 hours

Night exit from the Skul Khat camp (4750 m) and the beginning of the storming of the peak of Kilimanjaro – Uhuru peak (5895 m). Ascent is technically quite simple, height is a much more serious problem! Throughout the ascent, each deuce of participants will be given their own guide, who will monitor your physical and mental state (if you wish, after successfully reaching the peak of Uhuru, you can also go down to the nearest glacier). Next is the descent to the camp of Barafu, on the south side of Kilimanjaro. After a two-hour rest and lunch, you will continue to descend to the Millennium Camp (3820 m).

Note: Do not forget, 90% of incidents occur on the descent, all broken legs / hands were damaged on the descent. Also a lot of attention to the legs, you can knock down the nails on the fingers.

Change of heights: Skul Hut Camp (4750 m) – Uhuru Peak (5895 m) – Millennium Camp (3820 m) Trekking distance: 6 km Trekking time: 6-8 hours

The camp is located in a tropical forest, waking up in the morning, you will feel relief from lowering the height and satisfaction from conquering the summit. You will be offered a hot breakfast and will begin the descent to the exit from the National Park – the gate of Mweka (1650 m). Having gone down, the team will gather to congratulate you, after which it will be possible to leave your impressions about the ascent in the general journal. Next will be the presentation of commemorative certificates (in our office) and transfer to the hotel.

Change of heights: Millennium Camp (3820 m) – Mweka Gate (1650 m) Trekking distance: 12 km Trekking time: 4-5 hours

Relax in the hotel and transfer to the airport.

Note: On this day, check-out at the hotel is at 11:00. If you need a late check-out in the event of an evening flight, there is the possibility of extending your stay for an additional fee.
