What to do with dislocation of the leg if the leg is swollen

Most often the lower parts of the legs swell – the feet and ankles. Such localization is caused by a natural cause — earth gravity.

When swelling in the tissues accumulates fluid. Excess fluid is easily detected. If you strongly press your finger on the swollen area, then in this place, after you remove your finger, a recess remains for some time.

Often, edema of the legs is caused by diseases of the veins (chronic or acute thrombophlebitis, varicose saphenous veins, phlebothrombosis). Due to these diseases, the outflow of blood from the feet of the ankles is disturbed and the intracapillary pressure increases.

Edema develops on a sore foot. Often it is preceded by the appearance of pain. In acute thrombophlebitis, the skin may redden in the affected area.

Swelling in the ankle can also cause fluid accumulation in the tissues as a result of heart failure. In case of serious lung diseases, for example, in case of severe bronchial asthma, the heart also cannot work effectively, blood stagnates, venous pressure increases, which leads to edema, including ankles. Often, swelling can be caused by diseases of the kidneys and even the liver. In diseases of the liver, the fluid usually accumulates first in the abdomen (ascites), later on swelling and on the legs.

If the swelling is due to internal diseases, you should consult a doctor, but you can take some measures yourself.

A salt-free diet and reduced fluid intake help reduce fluid retention and swelling.

If your legs are swollen, you can lie down with one or two pillows under your legs so that your legs are higher than your heart, but do not put pillows under your knees.

Those with swollen legs should not wear socks or stockings with elastic bands.

Do not sit and do not stand for a long time. If you already have to be in one of these positions for a long time, from time to time let us work the muscles of the calf, moving your feet and toes. It is also useful to wear special medical elastic stockings or tights that help reduce swelling.

If you have edema, consult with your doctor. The doctor will conduct a thorough examination, including the heart and lungs, as well as the legs, take blood tests to check the kidneys and liver and determine the protein content. If necessary, diuretics can be prescribed (diuretics). They are effective, but they have some side effects. For example, the washing out of the body of potassium, necessary for the normal functioning of the heart. Therefore, taking diuretics, add to your diet foods rich in potassium (apricots, dried apricots, pumpkin, zucchini, watermelons, apples, raisins, milk).

Leg edema can also be caused by an ankle injury. The degree of swelling in this case does not indicate the severity of the damage. The leg can be very swollen both during stretching, and when the ligaments are torn, and during fractures.

With the fracture of the ankle bones, the leg swells less than with sprains. Sprain or rupture of ligaments is usually accompanied by hemorrhage into the surrounding tissues, due to which the skin in this place becomes blue-black.

If there is no fracture, then plaster is not required. But the treatment should begin immediately – to ensure the immobility of the joint, apply ice and

To determine the type of damage, the doctor will check the mobility of the leg in the ankle joint, and may also recommend x-rays. If there is no fracture or there is a non-hazardous fracture without displacement, you will probably be offered to continue home treatment. For other fractures, it is necessary to apply a plaster cast.

The injured leg must be kept raised. Immediately attach ice to the injured area, wrapped in a towel and plastic bag, and leave it for at least 30 minutes. If after the first half hour there is at least a slight swelling, then apply ice for the next few hours for 30 minutes at a 15-minute interval. If the ankle, when raised, ceases to hurt, you can carefully try to step on this leg. If the joint is still sore under load, then it is better not to do this on the first day. Warm compresses can only be done after 24 hours. The elastic bandage also helps. Do not stretch it when applying a bandage – it should not be very tight and prevent blood circulation. It is not necessary to bandage the children themselves, as an incorrectly applied bandage can disrupt blood circulation in the foot. If the skin below the bandage turned blue or pale, it means that the bandage is very tight. In this case, loosen the bandage.

After about 10 days, the ankle should return to normal. However, note that complete healing can be expected only after 4-6 weeks. If at this time you need to move, for example, do therapeutic exercises, then the ankle must be bandaged. However, the bandage will not protect against re-injury if you return to full load.
