Tinea versicolor is contagious

Skin diseases always cause heightened anxiety in a person who has noticed their manifestations. Not only do they negatively affect the appearance – often, vigilance is shown by people around them, who secretly avoid contact with the sick person. One of the fairly common skin ailments is pityriasis. What is this disease, and is it transmitted by contact?

Etiology of the disease

This skin disease has several names: scaly, colored, multi-colored. In common parlance, it is often possible to come across a simplified – a fetal versicolor.

The disease refers to the fungal infections of the upper horny layer of the skin (epidermis). The pathogen of pityriasis versicolor versicolor is a yeast-like fungus, constantly present on the surface of the human body, and existing in three different forms: the roundish is called Pityrosporum orbiculare, oval — Pityrosporum ovale and mycelial form — Malassezia furfur. However, this division by subspecies is quite conditional, since these yeasts can easily change from one form to another, showing various symptoms of depriving the multicolored.

Lichen color, according to its external signs, is easily confused with other diseases of the skin. Thus, the affected area of the body looks similar to the symptom of vitiligo, but there is nothing in common between these diseases. As already mentioned, versicolor versicolor is a fungal disease, and vitiligo is a violation of the skin pigmentation caused by completely different reasons – the effects of aggressive substances, autoimmune or endocrine abnormalities in the body and

Colonies of yeast fungi on the human body are a completely normal phenomenon from the point of view of microbiology. However, there are various reasons that lead saprophytic existence to their rapid pathogenic development, which causes color lichen.

Causes of the disease

Pityrosporum or Malassezia are carriers of almost all people. Why does color versicolor manifest itself not at all?

First of all, it can be associated with the individual characteristics of the organism. It is noticed that the scaly color lichen is very often manifested in people who have problems with the endocrine system, hormonal imbalance. That is why it often makes itself felt to pregnant women, people suffering from diabetes, thyroid disease, oncology or tuberculosis.

However, pityriasis versicolor can occur in people with a fairly stable functioning of the body. As a rule, people living in a hot climate, working in production with high temperature and humidity in a room, having contact with heavy metals, ionizing radiation, and actively engaged in sports are subject to it. The provoking factors to the manifestation of the disease is excessive sweating, obesity, wearing synthetic clothes in the summer, failure to observe the elementary rules of daily personal hygiene. Often, multi-colored lichen is the result of excessive use of antibacterial gels or ointments, passion for tanning in the sun or in a tanning bed. Noted cases of onset of symptoms of the disease against the background of experienced stressful situations.

Color lichen, according to statistics, more often affects men, and has a disease and some age limits. So, people under 20 and over 50 are more prone to it.

Symptoms and localization of the disease

Manifestations of tinea versicolor pronounced spots on the skin. Starting its development in the hair follicle, the spot quickly grows in size, looks like a certain rounded figure, sometimes of irregular shape, with clear boundaries, and clearly contrasts with the color of healthy skin. Spots tend to spread, merge with their neighbors, and with extensive lesions, the human body looks like a geographical map. The color of the spots may vary from yellowish to dark coffee. The areas of the skin that were affected by the psoriasis versicolor do not protrude above the common surface Often the course of the disease is absolutely not accompanied by any unpleasant sensations – pain, itching and

Usually such a lichen is located in the upper part of the body – neck, chest, back, shoulders, underarms. Less common lesions of the scalp and face.

Doctors in their practice share color pityriasis versicolor into several subspecies: black, yellow, and achromic. The difference between them, primarily in the form of pathogens, in the color of the affected areas, and in some of the nuances of the treatment. An accurate diagnosis can only be made by a specialist doctor after laboratory tests.

Interestingly, some people who have pronounced color lichen, try to hide its external manifestations in the guise of a sun tan. Alas, by this they achieve the exact opposite effect. Affected areas of the skin, deprived of natural pigmentation, are not exposed to ultraviolet rays (sun or in a tanning bed) and begin to contrast more with the sunburned parts of the body. By the way, another popular name for this disease has gone from here – multi-colored beach lichen.

Diagnosis of the disease

As already mentioned, the stain accompanying the versicolor versicolor looks the same as with vitiligo. However, upon closer examination, you can see a slightly flaky upper layer of the epidermis of a friable consistency, amenable to scraping with the nail.

Due to its fairly widespread prevalence, pityriasis versicolor lichen does not pose a particular problem for doctors in their diagnosis. One of the simplest methods — carrying out an iodine test according to Balzer — the affected areas with a loose upper layer receive a much more intense coloration. A more accurate localization of the disease can be installed using a special quartz lamp with a Wood filter. This method allows you to identify foci of the disease at an early stage of development, when they are not yet visible to the naked eye.

Of course, the most accurate will be the result of a microscopic laboratory examination of samples taken from a patient. It allows not only to establish the presence of the disease, but also to determine the subspecies of its pathogen, which is taken into account when prescribing treatment.

Features of the disease in children

Not as often as in adults or adolescents, but there is also a multi-colored lichen in children. As a rule, the characteristic localization of the disease – on the abdomen and chest, sometimes affects the scalp and face. Infection usually occurs through laundry and hygiene items.

Doctors say that versicolor versicolor in children may be due to hereditary factors, since family members have a rather similar skin type and chemical composition of sweat gland secretions. In addition, the disease can occur with careless attitude of parents to the daily hygienic measures.

Color lichen is quite common in adolescent children. This is a period of high physical activity, hormonal adjustment of the body, youthful unconsciousness of the importance of personal hygiene – all these factors are stimulants for the development of the disease.

Is it scabrous?

Disputes on this issue do not subside. For a long time, physicians attributed color lichen to the category of non-contact, non-communicable diseases. Naturally, people with pronounced signs of the disease were recommended to use strictly individual items of clothing, bed linen, towels, washcloths and

However, nowadays more and more supporters are finding the theory that the pods of color can be transmitted through even fleeting contact with a sick person, even a handshake.

Most likely the truth, as always, is somewhere in the middle. Excessively afraid of infection is not worth it, but to exercise a reasonable share of caution also does not hurt.

Red pityriasis versicolor

If we consider the multi-colored versicolor as a whole, one cannot help dwelling on another disease – red hair of the chine, or Deveri disease. This is quite a rare phenomenon, manifested mainly in children.

The etiology of this species is absolutely different from the typical deprive, and, by and large, is not even fully investigated. Most physicians tend to view it as a pronounced congenital pathology. Often the rash affects the head, as the hairline (with baldness) and face. Sites of the affected skin have a dense, scaly texture of dark pink or red color, often accompanied by painful sensations. It is characteristic that the foci of the disease spread even to the feet and palms, which is completely uncharacteristic of ordinary color lichen. In addition, in case of Dewerji’s disease, there is a clear damage to the nail plates.

Skin diseases, and color versicolor in particular – a very unpleasant phenomenon. At the slightest signs of the disease, it is necessary immediately, discarding the feeling of false modesty, to contact a specialist – a dermatologist for prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
