In the normal state, a person does not hear his own pulse. The feeling that the pulse beats in the ear, appears with inflammation of the inner and middle ear, problems with the heart and blood vessels, as well as brain tumors. The internal sound of the pulse has received the scientific name of pulsating tinnitus.
An unpleasant sensation of pulsation impairs the audibility of external sounds. If the internal pulsation persists for a long time, the person becomes nervous, sleepless, depressed.
What could be the cause of pulsating sensations? Why sometimes a person knocks in the ear like a pulse? And how to treat the ripple that appears?
Why the pulse in ears becomes audible: human physiology
Noise sensations in the ear are the result of the adaptation of the circulatory system to various factors. A pulse in the ear may appear:
- during exercise;
- when the external temperature drops;
- with a sharp change in pressure of the surrounding space (for example, when flying in an airplane);
- in case of internal pathologies of the body: blood pressure spikes, edemas, inflammations of the inner and middle ear.
If the ripple in the ears is not associated with internal pathology, then the circulatory system regulates the pressure in the middle ear for a short time, after which the noise disappears. If the pulsation is associated with pathological changes in the tissues, then the noise persists for a long time.
As extraneous noise in the ear can be heard ringing, hum, heart pulse. Pulsation is a sensation of blood moving through the vessels, a sign of various diseases. Under what diseases can a person get pulsating tinnitus?
More often than other causes, the sound of a pulse in the ears is triggered by an increase in pressure. With elevated or high pressure, the blood overflows the vessels, and therefore the pulsation becomes palpable from the inside.
The feature of the pulse in the ears due to high pressure: knocking equally in the right and left ear. Also coincide the pulse on the wrist and the pulsation that is felt in the ears.
Factors that increase blood pressure (stress, alcohol, poisoning, a number of drugs) can also cause a pulsation in the ears.
Vascular diseases: aneurysm, atherosclerosis
If the pulse in the ears is knocking for a reason atherosclerosis, then it is accompanied by noise. In atherosclerosis, cholesterol deposits form on the walls of blood vessels. They disrupt the normal flow of blood and the coordinated contraction of the heart and blood vessels. There is a noise from the uneven movement of blood through the vessels and pulsation.
Note: atherosclerosis pulse is felt equally in the right and left ear.
Aneurysm called protrusion of the blood vessel wall (as a rule, due to loss of elasticity, stretching). At the same time, the resulting “bag” presses on the adjacent tissues. If the aneurysm is formed near the inner or middle ear, the person hears his own heartbeat.
Inflammation of the ears
With inflammation of the middle ear (otitis) pulse is felt only in the ear, which is inflamed. Additional symptoms appear: the discharge of fluid from the auricle, possible temperature, swelling of the tissues around and painful sensations when pressing on the ear tragus. The edema around the inflamed tissue causes a pulsation.
In addition to otitis, the pulse in the ear can be “heard” when blockage ear canal gray.
Osteochondrosis is the cause of the blood supply to the brain. Stronger than others disrupts blood circulation neck osteochondrosis. Salt processes (osteophytes) squeeze blood vessels, violate the outflow of venous blood. As a result, intracranial pressure rises, a feeling of pulse appears in the ears. There are additional symptoms: pain in the back of the head and temporal region, loss of memory, soreness and stiffness in the neck.
Note: in osteochondrosis, internal sounds can be heterogeneous. In addition to the pulse, there are clicks, ringing in the ears, crackling.
In addition, the cause of pulsation in osteochondrosis can be squeezing and pinching the nerve roots. It may also be accompanied by numbness of the fingers or hands, dizziness.
Head and neck tumors
Tumor formations cause squeezing of blood vessels inside the head or neck. The pulse in the ear is formed when the two major vessels inside the head are narrowed – the carotid artery, the jugular vein.
To the note: an additional sign of the tumor – in a horizontal position, the pulsation in the ears increases. Also, the pulse in the ears increases in the evening, it can turn into ringing.
During tumor processes, the pulsation can be felt in one ear or in both ears (depending on the localization of the process). If the tumor is located in the neck – pulsation is possible in both ears at the same time.
Pulsating in the ear can be the result of injury. As a rule, any traumatic injury is accompanied by edema. The more pronounced the puffiness, the greater the pulsation and pain.
Edema during pregnancy
In the normal course of pregnancy, pulsation sensations are extremely rare. They may appear during edema. Disorders of water exchange leads to swelling of all mucous membranes. As a result, the woman feels a heartbeat in the ear.
What to do
The feeling of a heartbeat in the ears is almost always a sign of pathology. This symptom accompanies various diseases, so treatment will be determined by the cause of the problem.
If the pulsation is caused by increased pressure, stress, intoxication, then sedatives, drugs with a sedative or hypnotic effect are necessary. It will also help reduce pressure and remove noise in the head breathing exercises, a full breath and a slow exhalation.
With osteochondrosis – drugs will help to normalize the blood supply to the brain.
With atherosclerosis – physical activity and a diet in which the amount of fat is limited and the amount of fiber (vegetables) is increased.
If a the cause ripple steel swelling and inflammation, This will help diuretics and means for vasoconstriction. Vasoconstrictor drops instilled into the nose, in the position of the head on the side (down with a sore ear). With this treatment, the drug enters directly into the zone of inflammation through the Eustachian tube.
Brain aneurysm It is treated by surgical intervention.
Therefore, when a pulsation in the ears appears, it is recommended to undergo a comprehensive medical examination in order to find out the main cause of the disease.
