Magnesium for children

Why do we need magnesium for children

Magnesium for children and adults is a vital mineral. It is the 4th most abundant mineral in our bodies. It is in all cells of the body and in the blood, but most of all magnesium in bones and teeth. In total, the body of an adult magnesium is about 20-30 g.

He is needed

  • For carrying out nerve impulses and muscle contractions (including the muscles of the heart and the smooth muscles of the intestines).
  • Magnesium has a sedative effect on the nervous system, an antispasmodic effect on the walls of blood vessels and smooth muscles of the intestine, reduces intracranial pressure.
  • Magnesium is a membrane stabilizer that prevents the release of histamine from allergy cells.
  • Increases insulin production and cell sensitivity to it.
  • Increases metabolic rate.

Magnesium as a cure for adults

Therefore, magnesium (magnesium sulfate) has long been used as a medicine for adults..

  • As a means of gently lowering blood pressure and improving microcirculation (including in pregnant women).
  • In the composition of the drug, asparkam and cardimagnyl are prescribed for heart diseases in order to improve its performance, since magnesium is involved in the formation of ATP, the energy supplier for the cells of the body, including the heart muscle.
  • As an antacid with gastritis with high acidity.
  • As a choleretic agent, since magnesium stimulates bile secretion.
  • As a mild laxative, because it stimulates intestinal motility.
  • As a means of reducing the likelihood of stone formation in the kidneys (magnesium slows down the formation of calcium salts, especially oxalates, in competition with calcium). The combination with pyridoxine (B6) enhances many properties of magnesium.
  • As a sedative, a means of dealing with stress, a remedy for tension headaches, magnesium has gained popularity recently.

Daily need for magnesium depending on age according to Tutelyan

Magnesium for children is needed no less than for adults. For children, the daily requirement for magnesium can be calculated using the formula 6 mg per 1 kg of body weight.

Magnesium man gets from food and water. Stress, severe illness, high mental and physical stress increase the body’s need for magnesium and reduce its digestibility. The need for magnesium increases during the period of intensive growth, as well as for endocrine diseases, for example, thyrotoxicosis and diabetes mellitus.

Its digestibility is influenced by the individual characteristics of the body, the activity of various enzymes. In diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, with prolonged diarrhea or often repeated vomiting, absorption of magnesium is reduced.

According to researchers, modern people are deficient in magnesium, they regularly receive less of it with food and water. The lack of magnesium in the body according to the results of surveys conducted in Germany, was found in 33% of healthy people.

The absorption of magnesium is hampered by a large amount of animal fat and calcium in food, the presence of phytin in it, as well as products with a pronounced diuretic effect. Sausages, sausages, as well as sugary carbonated drinks, energy, coffee, alcohol interfere with the absorption of magnesium.

It is believed that food is absorbed from 30 to 50% magnesium.

Magnesium sources

Most of the magnesium in cocoa and bitter chocolate. Some products, such as sesame, nuts, seeds contain a lot of magnesium, but at the same time they contain phytin, which prevents its absorption. Magnesium is scarce in eggs, meat and dairy products.

When processing products in the process of preparation, a significant portion of magnesium is lost, and upon receipt of top-grade flour, up to 80% of magnesium is lost from grain. When cleaning cereals: buckwheat, barley, corn – 60-80%, while cleaning potatoes – up to 35%

The main source of well-digestible magnesium in food are cereals: buckwheat, oatmeal, corn, green vegetables: cabbage, green onions, spinach, sea fish and seaweed. It is useful to drink mineral water with magnesium.

Magnesium for children in baby food

The child of the first year of life receives magnesium with mother’s milk. On average, breast milk contains 4 mg of magnesium per 100 g. A child in the first half of his life eats 600-1000 ml of breast milk per day and with it 24-40 mg of magnesium.

In addition, magnesium is contained in water, the harder the water, the more magnesium in it.

But if the mother has a lack of magnesium in the body – a similar problem will arise in the baby. For the prevention of this condition, it is best for lactating mothers to take special vitamin-mineral complexes for pregnant women and lactating with magnesium in their composition.

Magnesium for formula-fed babies, in addition to other minerals, are added by baby food manufacturers to adapted milk formulas. If you compare the standard content of magnesium milk formulas for babies up to 6 months listed in this article, then the first place in the amount of magnesium will be taken by Nan Premium (8 mg / 100 ml), in the second place is Baby (6.8 mg / 100 ml), the least amount of magnesium contains a mixture of Semper (4.6 mg / 100 ml) – but 4.6 mg / 100 ml is the closest to the magnesium content in breast milk).

In the dishes recommended for the first feeding broccoli, cauliflower and porridge: buckwheat and oatmeal contain a lot of magnesium.

But at the same time, we did not take into account that not all the magnesium from the diet is absorbed, and that children also have stress and illness.

How magnesium deficiency can manifest in adults and children

  • Increased fatigue.
  • Irritability, increased emotionality, tearfulness, moods.
  • Sleep disturbances, poor sleep, anxious sleep, nightmares.
  • Headaches, dizziness.
  • Reduced memory, attention.
  • Flinching, nervous tics, muscle twitching, tremor (trembling hands, and in infants hands and chin),
  • Cramps in the calf muscles, muscle pain when squeezing.
  • Abdominal pain, constipation.
  • Heart pain, palpitations.
  • Increased blood pressure.
  • Aggravated reaction to a change in atmospheric pressure (meteorological sensitivity – feeling unwell when the weather changes), headaches, joint pains, etc.

After reading this, most mothers found some of these symptoms in themselves and in their children of different ages, and in babies under one year, some of the symptoms are very common. And most schoolchildren, especially at the end of the school year, have a headache, memory and attention decrease.

What to do? Urgently give the child magnesium? Do not hurry!

Magnesium overdose can be dangerous!

An overdose of magnesium preparations may occur with intravenous or intramuscular administration.

When ingestion symptoms of overdose can occur only in people with impaired renal function.

Overdose symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lowering of arterial pressure, bradycardia, disturbances of consciousness, respiratory disorders, anuria, coma, cardiac arrest.

Magnesium for children in excess dose is more dangerous than for adults.

Do not take magnesium without a prescription. You need to know which drug is right for you or your child, at what dose. Do you have any contraindications to taking magnesium?

Magnesium for Kids Medicines

What magnesium preparations exist at the moment and which of them can children?

Magnesium sulfate

The oldest and most famous drug is magnesium. Intramuscularly and intravenously, it is used for hypertension, convulsions, tachycardia. Inside: with constipation, as a laxative and with cholecystitis and biliary tract diskinenzy, as choleretic (for tubules) through the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract, magnesium sulfate is poorly absorbed. Magnesium sulfate is a serious drug that is used in children strictly according to indications and only as directed by the pediatrician.

Rennie – Antacid contains calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. Neutralizes the action of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Magnesium increases the formation of mucus in the stomach and protects the mucosa from exposure to hydrochloric acid. Not more than 10% of calcium and up to 20% of magnesium is absorbed into the blood. Not assigned to children under 12 years old.

Almagel (Maalox): algedrate + magnesium hydroxide – the mechanism of action is similar, but the components of the drug are practically not absorbed. It is contraindicated for children under 10 years old.

Gastal: hydrotalcide + magnesium hydroxide. It is contraindicated for children under 6 years old.

Cardiomagnyl is a combination of magnesium (magnesium hydroxide 15.2 mg) and acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin 75 mg). It is used to prevent thrombosis in adults only. It has a beneficial effect in hypertension. Improves nutrition of the heart muscle. Children under 12 are contraindicated due to the presence of aspirin in the medication.

Magnesium orotate, orotic acid magnesium salt. 1 tablet contains 32.8 mg of magnesium. Orotic acid is a metabolite, stimulates the synthesis of ATP, in addition, it facilitates the absorption of magnesium in the intestine. It is recommended for signs of magnesium deficiency, for heart diseases, to improve its performance (including for angina, myocardial infarction), and for nighttime cramps in the calf muscles. Used in children from 1 year.

Panangin and Asparkam

Panangin and asparkam-drugs analogues, differ in name and company-manufacturer. A preparation containing potassium and magnesium in the form of asparaginate. Exists in solution for intravenous administration and in tablets or pills for oral administration. Most often used for heart disease, to improve the work of the heart muscle. It is used in babies from birth, and is often prescribed, including for children with long-term diuretics, such as diacarba, to prevent the development of hypokalemia and hypomagnesemia. Recently, it has been widely advertised and recommended even for healthy people for the prevention of heart disease and deficiency of potassium and magnesium. 1 tab. contains 36.2 mg of potassium ions and 11.8 mg of magnesium ions and aspartate, a substance that helps transport ions across cell membranes.

Magne B6 – the most fashionable and currently popular drug magnesium, made in France. It contains only organic salts of magnesium, which are absorbed by the body more easily than inorganic ones. The bioavailability or digestibility of inorganic magnesium salts is 5-20%, while that of organic salts is 35-50%. Vitamin B6 facilitates the absorption of magnesium in the intestine, helps magnesium ions penetrate inside the cell.

Oral solution

The composition of the solution: magnesium pidolat, magnesium lactate and vitamin B6. According to the instructions allowed children from 1 year. Magnesium Pidolate is an organic magnesium compound that is better than all currently known magnesium salts in the nerve cells. Pidolovaya or pyroglutamic acid is a derivative of glutamic amino acid, and glutamic acid is a neurotransmitter, is involved in the processes of excitation of neurons.

Pyroglutamic acid has some nootropic properties: it improves memory, attention.

Pyroglutamate is referred to as piracetam-like compounds.

Experts recommend starting magnesium supplements from a drinking solution, so that after only 2 weeks, when some body becomes saturated with magnesium, it is recommended to switch to Magne B6 in the form of tablets.

1 vial of solution contains 100 mg of magnesium and 10 mg of pyridoxine.

How to remove Magne B6 solution from ampoule

Many mothers who use Magne B6 solution for their children complain that the contents are very difficult to extract from the ampoule. There is “one secret” here. Please note that the ampoule needs to be broken off from 2 sides. If only one end is broken off, the solution from the ampoule can only be removed with a syringe, but if both ends are broken off and the ampule is tilted at an angle above the glass, the contents of the ampoule can be poured into the glass without any efforts and diluted with water. 10 ml of solution is diluted in 100 ml of water, 5 ml – in 50 ml, (1:10 ratio)

Magne B6 tablets

Magnesium is found in the drug in the form of lactate. 1 tab. contains 48 mg of magnesium and 5 mg of pyridoxine. Magne B6 tablets are approved for children from 6 years old.

Magne B6 forte

Magnesium B6 forte contains magnesium in the form of citrate – this variant of organic magnesium salts has been used in the world for over 20 years. Thanks to citrate, magnesium is well absorbed, easily penetrates cell membranes and lasts longer in the body. 1 tab. Magne B6 forte contains 100 mg of magnesium and 10 mg of pyridoxine.

Calculation of the children’s daily dose of Magne B6

The therapeutic children’s dose for Magne B6 is calculated to be 10–30 mg of magnesium per kg of weight per day, although the daily need for magnesium for a child is 6 mg / kg. When calculating the therapeutic dose, the bioavailability of magnesium from the drug is taken into account — 33-36%.

Magne B6 for children up to one year old

According to the official instructions, Magne B 6 solution is contraindicated for children under 1 year old and tablets up to 6 years old. This is due to the lack of clinical studies on the use of drugs in children.

Meanwhile, neurologists have long been prescribed a drinking solution of Magne B6 to children in the first year of life and see good results. Magnesium is necessary not only for adults, but also for babies.

But you must remember that you can not use this medicine without a prescription! ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN!

Other preparations from the manufacturer Magne B6

Magnesium-based manufacturers Magne B6 have developed

  • Magne-good-sleep (combination of magnesium oxide, valerian extract, vitamin E, tryptophan, polyunsaturated fatty acids and choline),
  • Magne positive (magnesium, omega3 / omega6, tryptophan, vitamin E, vitamins of group B).
  • Magne-Express (magnesium and vitamin B6 in granules for sucking). But these medicines are even newer and recommended for adults only.
