Causes of monthly delays

Normal duration of a menstrual cycle

The normal duration of the menstrual cycle is a period of 21-35 days (usually 28 days). If the menstrual cycle lasts longer, then this is already considered a delay. It is very important to be able to correctly calculate the length of the cycle, oddly enough, many women do it wrong. They count it from the last day of menstruation to the first day of the next menstruation. So this is not correct – the length of the menstrual cycle is calculated from the first day of the current menstruation to the first day of the next menstruation.

All the causes of delayed menstruation can be divided into natural physiological and pathological.

Natural Causes of Monthly Delay

This is one of the main reasons for the delay in menstruation. Typically, such delays are accompanied by an exacerbation of taste, nausea vomiting, changes in the skin of the skin, an increase and tenderness of the mammary glands. In modern conditions, it is quite easy to eliminate this cause, it is enough to buy a test at a pharmacy, and to be sure you can go to a gynecologist and do an ultrasound.

During lactation, women have an increased production of the hormone prolactin, which blocks ovulation. After the cessation of breastfeeding, menstruation usually returns in one to two months.

During puberty, delayed menstruation is the physiological norm and does not require any treatment. Typically, such failures are observed within two years after the first menstruation, but if the normal cycle is not established after a 2-year period, then this is a serious reason to undergo an examination.

Perimenopause (preclimax)

In women older than 45 years, the delay in menstruation is very often a consequence of the approaching menopause (perimenopause). All this is a natural process for the body of a woman. Each time the delays will be longer and longer, until they stop completely. Quite often, women in the perimenopause period feel a change in mood, a decrease in sexual desire, hot flashes.

Pathological causes of delayed menses

Endocrine and gynecological diseases

Delay of menstruation is most often caused by the following diseases:

Polycystic ovary syndrome. In this disease, the production of female sex hormones is disrupted and the synthesis of male sex hormones increases. Due to the large amount of male hormones in the middle of the cycle, ovulation does not occur and the egg does not come out of the follicle. In women suffering from this disease, male-type hair growth, facial acne, oily hair and weight gain are observed. The disease leads to infertility.

Polycystic ovary syndrome can be caused by the following causes – dysfunction of the pituitary, hypothalamus, thyroid, adrenal glands and the ovaries themselves.

Adnexitis (inflammation of the uterus). When adnexitis disrupts the process of hormone production responsible for the regulation of the menstrual cycle.

A benign tumor of the uterus (uterine myoma) and endometriosis. These diseases can be both the cause of uterine bleeding, and the cause of delayed menstruation.

Causes of monthly delays

Also, the causes of delays in the menstrual cycle can be:

– colds (ARVI, flu),

– thyroid dysfunction,

– incorrect position of the intrauterine device,

– internal defects in the ovary itself,

– urinary tract infections (thrush, etc.)

Abortion is always the cause of hormonal imbalances in the body. But this is not the only reason – with abortion, an excessive amount of uterine tissue can be removed, which normally is excreted in the form of blood during menstruation. It takes time to restore this layer, so there may be a delay of 2-3 weeks after an abortion, if this does not happen, then this is a reason to consult a doctor.

Delayed menstruation is also observed after medical abortion, in particular after the use of drugs Escapel and Postinor.

Canceling contraceptive hormones

Oral ovarian hyper-inhibition syndrome may occur during or after oral contraceptive withdrawal. This cider is characterized by the absence of menstruation for several months. As the rules after 2-4 months, menstruation is normalized, but if this does not happen, then the drugs that stimulate the maturation of the egg (chorionic gonadotropin, pergonal) are prescribed or means stimulating the pituitary gland (clomiphene). Contraceptives that cause disorder of ovarian function are not prescribed in the future.

Quite often, the cause of the delay in menstruation are drugs. So delay monthly can cause:

– cytostatic drugs

– combined hormonal contraceptives,

– drugs for the treatment of endometriosis (Diferelin, Buserelin, Decapeptil, Zoladex and

With obesity, the transformation of the hormone estrogen into androgen occurs, and without a sufficient amount of this hormone, menstruation is almost impossible. Obese people often develop hyperandrogenism, causing problems associated with ovulation and delayed menstruation.

Physical stress

Excessive physical exertion depletes the woman’s body, in response to this, the body produces hormones that delay menstruation. This is a normal protective reaction of the body, since blood loss will further weaken the body. Therefore, if, against the background of excessive overvoltage, there is a delay in menstruation, then this organism signals that its forces are at the limit. After reducing physical activity, delays quickly cease.

Dystrophy and malnutrition

The reason for the delay of menstruation during dystrophy is similar to the reason arising from physical overstrain – the body does not allow blood loss, which can weaken it even more. Even there is such a thing as a critical menstrual mass – about 45-47 kg. If women weigh less, then the risk of having a long delay in menstruation is very high.

Stress, climate change, climate change

Any change of scenery, be it a trip to the sea, moving to another city, a new job is almost always stressful for the body and naturally the body is mobilized to fight it. As a result, the release of hormones responsible for the processes in the ovary and uterus is disrupted, and menstruation stops. An obvious example of such disorders is amenorrhea of wartime, when women stopped menstruating.

Chronic intoxication

Constant abuse of alcohol, nicotine and especially drugs weakens the immune system of women, which ultimately leads to hormonal disruptions.

Some doctors as one and the reasons for the delay of menstruation indicate heredity, but this is the wrong approach. Most likely the woman inherited some disease, which is the cause of delays. In this case, you need to find out what the disease is, and not write off all of the bad heredity.

Treatment of delayed menstruation

Treatment of delayed menstruation is reduced to the treatment of the disease that caused this deviation. It makes no sense to look for any medication to cause it – this will not solve the problem, since the cause will not be eliminated. Eliminating the causes of the delay causes the cycle to normalize very quickly.

It should be noted that there are no drugs created only for the treatment of delay and stimulation of menstruation. There are medicines that can cause menstruation (mifepristone, dinoprost, etc.), but they are used exclusively for provoking abortion. The use of these drugs will only disrupt the hormonal background, which further aggravate the situation.

There are complex tools aimed at the treatment of premenstrual syndrome and the restoration of hormonal levels. Dismenorm can be used in the treatment of premenstrual syndrome, and painful, irregular, scanty menses. When taking the drug, it is noted that it contributes to the normalization of hormonal background, has a calming effect and helps to restore the cycle during irregular, rare and weak menses. The drug is also used to solve problems with conception associated with insufficiency of the corpus luteum due to transient hyperprolactinemia (or due to insufficiency of the luteal phase). Dysmenorm in violation of reproductive function helps to restore ovulation and full luteal phase, reduces psycho-emotional overstrain, and also reduces the symptoms of PMS, such as engorgement and tenderness of the mammary glands, bloating, swelling, irritability, tearfulness and tiredness.

It should also be noted that the intrauterine device is contraindicated for women suffering from delayed menstruation.

Monthly Delayed Surveys

To find out the reasons for the delay of the month, the following studies are appointed:

– Ultrasound of the pelvic organs, thyroid and adrenal glands. This study is conducted to exclude pregnancy, tumors, gynecological and endocrine diseases.

– Examination of sexually transmitted diseases (gonorrhea, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, mycoplasmosis, ureaplasmosis, etc.).

– Hormonal studies. Determine the levels of estrogen, progesterone, FSH, LH, PRL, as well as check thyroid hormones and adrenal glands.

– Examination of the pituitary gland (radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, electroencephalography). Diseases of the pituitary gland are often the cause of delayed menstruation.

– Scraping of the inner layer of the uterus and its further histological examination. Scraping is carried out from the cavity and canal of the cervix.
