Food supplements and products with live bacteria belonging to the class of probiotics, capable of burning visceral fat, showed a new study.
The results of a small Canadian study indicate that probiotics are able to prevent the absorption of fat in the intestine, thereby effectively affecting weight loss.
True, it should be noted that the study was funded by Micropharma, which specializes in probiotic dietary supplements.
Under normal conditions, we completely digest food and absorb the calories it contains, – says study leader Peter Jones of the Canadian University of Manitoba. “But when a large number of probiotic bacteria are present in the intestines, they interfere with the absorption of calories, most of which are eliminated from the body.
Unfortunately, the study was not aimed at a specific study of the problem of obesity, so the experiment involved average volunteers who had a small excess weight.
The resulting slimming effect was modest, so talking about the cardinal effect of probiotics on weight loss is also not worth it. They are only an additional factor in influencing the process of losing weight with proper nutrition and active exercise.
Of course, it will not be possible to consume probiotics and reduce your weight, says a microbiologist at a Canadian probiotic research center who did not participate in the study. – Probiotics are active cultures of bacteria that can change the ecological background of the intestinal microflora. Beneficial to the human body, they improve depression, help cope with gastric problems, and can even affect the runny nose. But all these effects are minor, and can not have a decisive impact.
Earlier studies have also shown that intestinal bacteria are able to alter the level of absorption of calories from digested food. The Canadian study went a little further by trying to determine how this affects weight loss.
28 study participants who had a small excess weight were given a daily portion of yogurt with probiotics. Some volunteers received yogurt with the bacteria Lactobacillus fermentum, and the other with Lactobacillus amylovorus. In this case, all participants in the experiment continued to eat, as usual.
After a month and a half, those who ate yogurt from Lactobacillus amylovorus lost 4% of adipose tissue, while eating yogurt from Lactobacillus fermentum lost 3%, while most of the fat left the abdomen, which indicates the effect of probiotics, mainly on visceral fat.
According to scientists, the prevention of the absorption of fat by bacteria is due to their effect on the salts of bile acid.
The fact is that the liver (gallbladder) releases chemicals that, when mixed with fat, help it to digest, these are the so-called bile acids. Bacteria destroy the salts of these acids preventing the normal absorption of fat.
Unlike drugs that work in the same way (preventing the absorption of fat), probiotics do not have any side effects, and on the contrary, they are very useful for the body.
Unfortunately, the study was neither extensive nor long-term, so it is impossible to say with certainty that with the help of probiotics you will be able to lose kilograms over a long time period.
The study was published in the journal Functional Food.
